What is Leukemia? • Cancer • Forms in bone marrow • Makes abnormal blood cells • Excess build up of cells • Usually white blood cells • May affect red blood cells or platelets
Types of Leukemia • Four types: Myelogenous acute Myelogenous chronic Lymphocytic acute Lymphocytic chronic • Acute – develops fasts • Chronic – develops slow • Myelogenous - white blood cells called granulocytes • Lymphocytic – white blood cells called lymphocytes
Risk Factors • No actual causes • Age • Previous cancer therapy • Smoking • Chemical exposure Benzene • Genetics Disorders (Down syndrome) Family history • Blood disorders
Symptoms • Flu like symptoms Headaches Vomiting Paleness Fatigue / Weakness Body pain / discomfort • Swollen lymph nodes, liver, spleen & gums • Night sweats • Frequent infections • Seizures • Bleeding / Bruising • Weight / Appetite changes
Diagnosis • Family history • Physical exam swollen lymph nodes, liver & spleen • Blood tests CBC (complete blood count) • Biopsy removes bone marrow • Spinal tap removes cerebrospinal fluid • Cytogenetics abnormal chromosomes

Treatment • Chemotherapy standard • Biological therapy special immune cells • Radiation therapy localized disease • Stem cell / Bone marrow transplants • Surgery • Watchful waiting

History • Came from Greek words “Leukos” and “Heima” meaning white blood • Ancient Greeks discovered Leukemia in 4th century BC • Officially diagnosed by John Hughes Benett in 1845 • In 1913 it was further divided into four types • In 1970 it was declared that leukemia could be cured • 1960: 4% of children survived, today: 80% survival rate
