Learning Objectives: • At the end of this lecture, the learners should be able to: • Define Leukemia • Classify Leukemia • Explain its pathophysiology • Discuss the symptoms, diagnosis & treatment
From the Greek leukos - white, and haima - blood a type of cancer of the blood or bone marrow characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells.
Some rarer types are usually considered to be outside of this classification scheme. • Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) • T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL) • Large granular lymphocytic leukemia • Adult T-cell leukemia
Diagnosis: • repeated complete blood counts and a bone marrow examination • blood chemistry tests • X-ray, MRI, or ultrasound • CT scans
Treatment: • Induction Chemotherapy • Consolidation or Intensification therapy • CNS prophylaxis • Maintenance Treatment • Bone marrow transplantation
