Ch. 12 1 The gang war starts with Max Pulliam, his wife and a friend being attacked outside of a roadhouse. They were shot and driven to Herrin Hospital and left.
Ch 12 -2 • Pulliam was being transported from Herrin Hospital to Benton Hospital. • The ambulance was stopped and the assailants boarded the ambulance. • Pulliam’s mother laid across her son to save his life. • He was hit in the head by a gun.
Ch 12 -3 • Art Newman and his wife were driving from Harrisburg to Marion. • The Shelton Gang did a drive-by firing at the Newmans.
The Shady Rest • Charlie Birger’s hideout
Ch 12 – 7 & 8 • Birger was a Russian-Jew from outside the southern Illinois area. • Birger was loved in Harrisburg. • He would take care of the poor and children in Harrisburg. • Would not let people of H’burg gamble at his roadhouses.
Ch 12 - 9 • Birger met the Sheltons while he was in Herrin Hospital in the Fall of 1923.
12-10 • The Sheltons stole a diamond ring from a dealer in H’burg. • Birger forced the Sheltons to return the diamond ring. • This led to a riff between the two.
12-11 • The Sheltons were local boys from Harrisburg who got involved in bootlegging.
12-12 &13 • Joe Adams was the mayor West City. • He was friends with the Sheltons. • He helped keep the Tanker Truck for the Sheltons.
12-15 • A nearby farmer said he heard 5 or 6 shots and then a loud explosion.
Lory Price • He was a state patrolman who was working with Birger. • Birger would steal cars and then when a reward would be posted Price would “find” the car. • Price and Birger would split the reward money. • Nicknamed Slim.
12-18 • Price and his wife were both found to be missing.
Chapter 13 – 1-3 • Birger turned in the Sheltons for stealing the mine payroll on Jan. 27, 1925. • They got away with $21,000. • The key witnesses against the Sheltons were Art Newman and Harvey Dungey. • The Sheltons were found guilty and sentenced to 25 years.
13 - 5 • Lory Price’s body was found in a field near DuBois, IL.
13-7 & 8 • Harry Thomasson was a 19 year old member of the Birger gang. • He and his brother shot and killed Joe Adams.
13-9 • He plead guilty because he thought Birger had killed Elmo in the Shady Rest explosion.
13-10 • Elmo Thomasson was burned up in the Shady Rest.
13-11 • Ray Hyland was the driver of the get away car when Adams was killed.
13-12 • The conviction of the Sheltons was dropped because Harvey Dungey had perjured himself. • Birger threatened to kill Dungey if he did not lie against the Sheltons.
13-13 • 4 of Birger’s men killed Ward Casey Jones • Rado Millich, Clarence Rone, Ural Gowen, and no-name.
13-14 • Art Newman was found in Long Beach, CA. and brought back to IL.
13-15 • Birger suspected Price of spying so he kidnapped Lory and Ethel. • Ethel was shot and dumped down a Carterville mine shaft. • Lory was taken to the BarBQ stand by the S.R. He was shot 3 times and then they dumped him at DuBois.
13-17 • Ural Gowen got 25 years. • Rado Millich was hanged.
13-18 • Birger was in jail while the trial was taking place.
Chapter 14 – 1 & 2 • Birger was charged with the murder of Joe Adams. • Art Newman was the one who turned against Birger.
14-3 • Rone said he saw the preparation of the killing of Adams. • Ritter wrote the note, • Hyland dipped the bullets in poison, • Elmo was given the gun and the letter.
14-4 • Birger told the Thomassons the law would not suspect anything.
14-5 • The states attorney emphasized the fact that Birger used boys to kill for him.
14-6 • Newman and Hyland were sentenced to life. • Charlie Birger was sentenced to… • DEATH
14-7 • Birger’s attorney said the verdict was contrary to the law and evidence. • He appealed to the IL Supreme court.
14-8 • Birger would have been tried for the murder of Lory Price.
14-9 • Birger tried to act like he was insane during his insanity trial. • Rolled his head, cursed, yelled at witnesses and the judge. • It took the jury 12 minutes to find him SANE.
14-10 • Birger was able to get drugs, and even have “special” visits with his wife.
14-11 • Charlie Birger was calm and gracious toward his executioners. • He refused to take the sedatives offered by the jailers. • “It’s a beautiful world.”
15 - 1&2 • Oldham Paisley was the editor of the Marion Republican Newspaper. • Paisley was concerned about the murders of the Prices.
15-3 • Leslie Simpson was found guilty of killing Lory Price. • Arrested in New York • Paroled in 1951 • Connie Ritter was arrested in Gulf Port, Miss. and guilty of the murders of Adams, Price, & Price. Died in Menard in1948
Ernest Blue was never arrested. His body was found. • Arlie Boswell was convicted of violating the Ntl. Proh. Law and was sentenced to two years. • Art Newman got life imprisonment for killing Lory Price.
Conclusion-1 • By the end: • Newman, Simmons, and Wooten were still in jail serving life in prison. • Ritter died in Menard. • Simpson was paroled in 1950. • Gowen was released in 1941.
