Listening to Arguments…Literally • Identify the argument(s) • What is wrong for the artist? • Identify the issue(s) • What is the artist asking the listener to do? • If the title is the thesis statement, where are areas within the song that support it? • Write your reaction to each song.
Closing Reflection • How does each song present the issue(s) begin addressed? • Identify an argument in one of the songs: what influences your interpretation? • Think of the music itself, the tone of the singer, the chorus, and of course, the use of language. Also to consider are the events that occurred around the time the song was released. • How does your understanding of the key terms figure into your interpretation? Where do you see them being used?
Homework and Reminders • Incident summary due by 10p tonight • Office hours today from 1-2:30 • Extra Credit (Optional) Due: Friday February 15 by 10p Listen to the songs “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SADPuUYF_4I & “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dabH45Af2bo : Identify the issue(s) and argument(s) within both songs.
