  2. Politcial • 1603 Tokugawa Ieyasuunifies Japan. • The political structure base is the feudal system, which like Europe had its own knights, kings, and lords.

  3. Economic • For awhile Tokugawa rulers remained open to foreign influence until Japanese people started to convert to Catholicism • Japan’s xenophobia(fear of foreigners) caused the government to isolate Japan from the rest of the world • Isolation helped preserve Japanese traditions, but caused a lack of progress in Japan

  4. Economic cont. • Many Japanese people took an interest in western goods so they created a trade system.

  5. Cultural • Many things were brought over from china to Japan like Buddhism and they have many things like kabuki witch is like theatre.

  6. Social • Feudal society based on rank, which on top was the warrior class which was the Daimyo and the Samurai, next came the Farmers, Artisans, and at the bottom were the merchants. • The also had Confucian values from China.

  7. Military • Ruled in feudal Japan • Samurai defended their land • Defeated their rivals and took power

  8. Reasons for the Decline of Tokugawa • Lack of progress and development of technology, ideas, and knowledge from government isolation • Japan was left vulnerable to foreign powers and the Tokugawa rule came to an end
