  2. Areas of Interaction What are they? What am I supposed to do with them? …….And just how long is this going to take?

  3. Areas of interaction: What are they? These are areas or “themes” common to all subjects that help students make connections between their classroom subjects and the real world. They should help students develop an awareness of broader and more complex global issues. They are distinctive to the MYP.

  4. The five areas: • Approaches to learning • Human Ingenuity • Community and Service • Environments • Health and Social Education

  5. Human Ingenuity Students explore the processes and products of human creativity in order to appreciate and develop the human capacity to influence, transform, enjoy and improve the quality of life. How and why do we create? What are the consequences?

  6. Community AND Service • (NOT Community Service) • Requires students to take an active part in the communities in which they live, thereby encouraging responsible citizenship. • How do we live in relation to each other? • How can I contribute to the community? • How can I help others?

  7. Environments • (No not tree hugging) • This area aims to develop students’ awareness of their interdependence with their environment so that they understand and accept their responsibilities. • In this context environment refers to the totality of conditions surrounding us. • What resources do we have? • What are my responsibilities?

  8. Health and social education • This area deals with physical, social and emotional health, and intelligence—key aspects of development leading to complete and healthy lives. • How do I think and act? • How can I look after myself and others? • How am I changing?

  9. Approaches to learning • Through ATL teachers provide students with the tools to take responsibility for their own learning, and develop an awareness of how they learn best. • How do I learn best? • How do I know? • How do I communicate? • ATL’s occur every day and in every classroom.

  10. What do I do with them? • Use the AOI’s as a focus for teaching and learning. • Think of the AOI as a theme – you may not mention it every day, but as you teach, the lesson can be focused around that general idea. • Pick an Area of Interaction for each unit. • Look for the best natural fit. • Don’t stretch. • If more than one area seems to fit, you may want to divide the unit up.

  11. What do I do with them? 4. Use them to help develop interdisciplinary units. Example: How does movement affect society? 5. Keep the Areas of Interaction at the heart of student work by developing good guiding questions.
