  1. Have out your rough draft. Print a copy to room 2308 NOW! Prepare to edit….

  2. #1 – Checking Elaboration • Underline sentences throughout entire essay alternating colors. • Count the number of sentences in each paragraph. • Check for elaboration. • Check for sentence variety: simple, compound, complex, compound-complex • Add sentences/details as needed.

  3. #2 – Check for variety of sentence beginnings • Draw a triangle on the first word of each sentence. • After all words are “triangled,” start at the beginning of the essay and read each word. • Check for variety of sentence beginnings. If two consecutive words are the same, consider changing one to achieve a more interesting essay.

  4. #3 – Place an “X” on the following words. • A lot/ Alot • Very • Many • Some • Replace or eliminate the word.

  5. #4 - Contractions • Circle each contraction in your essay. • Write out each correction. • Helps create a formal style for your essay.

  6. #5 - Commas • Place a square around each comma. • Check that the comma is doing one of the following: 1. Introducing a dependent clause 2. Items in a series 3. Joining 2 sentences with a coordinating conjunction. 4. Introducing dialogue

  7. #6 - Semicolons • Circle each semicolon. • Make sure it is connecting 2 complete sentences (contains a subject and a verb)

  8. #7 – “To Be” Verbs: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been • Circle each “to be” verb in your essay. • Count the total number of “to be” verbs. • Eliminate half by rewriting the sentence, substituting another word, moving the end of your sentence to the beginning. • Improves the sound and style of your essay. Keeps essay from sounding too simplistic.

Thesis Statement • Check that your thesis statement is an “umbrella” covering your entire essay. • Make sure that every word is specific, significant and effective. • Highlight the entire thesis with a new color. • Read first paragraph and then read concluding paragraph. In their a connection? Continuity? • Revise if necessary
