Practical Functions Of the Endocrine system • Alertness • Stress Response • Growth • Energy • Emotions
Organs (Glands) Hypothalamus and Pituitary Gland- Thyroid and Parathyroid- Adrenal Glands- Pancreas- Pineal, Thymus, & Reproductive-
Hypothalamus • Controls the Pituitary Gland • Connection between the Nervous System and the Endocrine System
Pituitary Gland • Divided into two parts • Anterior Pituitary • hGH • Posterior Pituitary • ADH • OT
Thyroid & Parathyroid • Parathyroid: • Embedded in Thyroid Gland • Controls calcium levels • Thyroid: • regulates metabolism
Pancreas • Broken in to 2 parts • Endocrine secretes insulin and glucagon hormones, maintaining sugar level
REPRODUCTIVE • Ovaries: • Produces and houses the ova • Produces estrogen and progesterone • Testes: • Produces sperm • Produces and secretes androgens (testosterone)
PINEAL & THYMUS • Pineal Gland: • Small and cone-shaped • Secretes melatonin • Thymus: • Plays a role in immune function • Produces thymosin
Adrenal Glands • Involved in “Fight or Flight” response • Blood Pressure Regulation • Mobilizations of fats proteins and carbs • Stimulated by nervous system, responds by release of hormones directly into the bloodstream
Health facts • Medications to replace functions • Hormone level effects • Memory • Intellectual Capabilities • Emotional State • Behavior • Immune Functions • Growth
