Cont’d… Economics search moving ahead Aggressively pursue faculty additions this year– pursue faculty with the promise of excellent scholarship and instruction. Discussions with Provost have begun
Opportunity: Messaging Our message outside is that we are, • Enhancing student access--all levels, +SATs, 3 NM scholars • Retaining students- advising, engagement initiatives • Exposing to quality faculty– research, mentoring Dr. Berg • Maintaining grad rates- 4 years for UG, and 75 hours PhD. • Learning Technology--innovate, labs, online/blended learning, but of high quality • Preparing students for success—to repeat the cycle

Strategic Objectives Faculty Recruitment---Hire the best Ugs-recruit, advise, retain, on time, & assess outcomes Grad— rigor, time to degree, contribute to “200” More External funding--grant/contract activity Diversity– hire members of under-represented groups Staff well-being—professional development Messaging– Communication strategy, alumni/outreach, website Community Engagement—alumni, development board, internships, faculty speaking engagements New revenue streams– executive education Cross University collaboration—UT S. of Public Health/UT SWx Structure -- School Administrative Committee– 10/28 – examine what we do, how we do it, seek efficiencies
Many Concerns A mix of Internal & External Concerns • State financial situation-- the next 2-4 years budget resources will be very tight, substantial growth is likely, and resources will have to be re-distributed • What we do/how we do it, scrutiny is “new normal” • Examination of faculty teaching and research activities • Productivity under the microscope • Retention & graduation rates-the key metrics, and we are successful • Confronted by substantial growth– how to grow responsibly, not derail scholarship, time to degree, and staff overload • Controlling costs
Our challenge We can either say, we like things the way they were and spend our time looking back or we can adjust and take the lead in a new educational environment.
