The EEA Grants • The EEA Financial Mechanism is funded by 3 donor states – Norway (95%), Iceland and Liechtenstein • Overall objectives – reduce social and economic disparities in Europe, strengthen bilateral relations • Bulgaria participates in the EEA Financial Mechanism since 2007 • Funding provided in 2007-2009 - 21.5 mln euro, based on an intergovernmental agreement
Funding under the EEA Grants 2007-09Cultural heritage • Almost 5 mln euro dedicated to projects preserving Bulgaria’s cultural heritage • 11 supported projects, implemented by municipal and regional administrations, cultural institutions, NGOs • Exchange of experience and improved cooperation with Norwegian partner organizations

Funding under the EEA Grants 2007-09Scholarships • Almost 600 000 euro dedicated to a special Scholarship Fund • Opportunity for students and academic staff to participate in exchange programmes with Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein • 3 calls for proposals launched in 2009 – 2011 by the Fund Intermediary - Ministry of Education, Youth and Science, International and European Cooperation Directorate More information at www.mon.bg/below/eeagrants
Funding under the EEA GrantsNew financial period • A new financial period of EEA Grants is agreed –Bulgaria will receive 78,6 mln. eurofor 2009-14 • A programme approach is introduced – 8 thematic programmes will be developed • The preparation and the implementation of each programme is assigned to a Programme Operator • Conservation of cultural heritage and support to student and academic mobility remain a priority
Funding under the EEA Grants 2009-14Cultural heritage • The designated Programme Operator for the Cultural heritage programme is the Ministry of Culture with support from the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works • Up to 2,5 mln. euro areenvisaged for phase II of SAMCA project • Not less than 500 000 euro shall be set aside for a small grants scheme for promotion of diversity in culture and arts, including cultural exchange between the Donor States and Bulgaria.
Funding under the EEA Grants 2009-14Scholarships • The designated Programme Operator for the Scholarship programme is the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science • Overall objective - enhanced human capital and knowledge base in the Beneficiary States • Total funding – 1,5 mln. euro • Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education (SIU) will function as a lead Donor Programme Partner.
EEA Grants 2009-14 – next steps • Preparation of programme proposals and sending them for approval by the EEA Grants secretariat in Brussels (FMO) – Feb. 2012 • Approval of the programme proposals – June 2012 • Launching of the new programmes – July/August 2012 www.eeagrants.org

Translation subsidy for Norwegian books provided by NORLA www.norla.no • Translation subsidies to publishers of Norwegian literature abroad, both fiction and non-fiction • Travel grants for Norwegian authors and their translators • Promotional subsidies for sample translations and presentations of authors • Translation subsidies for dramatic works
