  3. Proper Postureand Technique • Sit up straight • Feet flat on the floor • Body centered in front of the computer • Elbows naturally by side • Fingers curved • Wrists low, but not touching the keyboard • Quick, snappy strokes

Proper Posture and Technique--continued • Quick down and in motion of the thumb • Right pinky used for the enter key; other fingers remain on the home row • Use the appropriate pinky for each shift key • Keep your eyes on the copy (what you are typing from, not the keyboard and your fingers) • Do not worry about correcting errors when working on building speed

  5. QWERTY • Qwerty the most common arrangement of keys on the keyboard

  6. Keyboard layout • The keyboard is made up of 4 sections: • Alphanumeric Keys • Numeric Keypad • Function Keys • Directional Keys

  8. Alphanumeric • Located in the center of the keyboard • Made up of letters, numbers and symbols • Homerow is made up of: • asdf (left hand) • Jkl; (right hand)

  9. Home Row Keys - Left Hand • A S D F • The left pinky is A • The left ring finger is S • The left middle finger is D • The left index finger is F

  10. Home Row Keys - Right Hand • J K L ; • The right index finger is J • The right middle finger is K • The right ring finger is L • The right pinky is ;

  11. Numeric Keypad • Located on the right side of the keyboard • Used for calculations and typing many #s • Must have Numlock key on to operate the keys • Homerow is made up of 456

  14. Directional Keys • Let you move throughout the page • Up, Down, Left or Right

Figuring Gross Words a MinuteGWAM • Every 5 strokes (punctuation marks, numbers, symbols, and spaces) equals 1 word. • Take the total number of letters keyed in a specific timed period and divide by 5 • Example: How many GWAM can you type if you keyed a total of 105 characters in 1 minute? • 105/5=21 GWAM
