Staffing • January 2009 – HT appointed • January 2009 – supply teacher in P2/3 • June 2009 – PT appointed secondment • August 2009 – NQT for session 09/10 • August 2009 – supply Learning Assistant P1-3 • June 2010 – 3 retirements, 1 transfer, 1 NQT attained GTCS appproval • June 2010 – PT appointed permanently • August 2010 – 3 class teachers appointed • August 2010 – full LA complement

  3. Staffing 2 • 7 teachers, including HT, PT and SfL teacher • 5 composite classes (4 full with 25 pupils and one with 2 places remaining) • Supported by visiting teachers in Music, PE and French, • 2 Learning Assistants, Admin and Janitor • 1 Behaviour Support Assistant, • 3 voluntary helpers, • 1 Further Education College student plus teaching students throughout session

Celebrating Success 1 • Improving pupils’ attainment and achievement: • Our attendance rate at 95.34% is above Midlothian and national averages and has improved by 1.5%, over the last three years. • Our exclusion rates are low, at 0% decreasing from 1.7% the previous session. • Free meal entitlement (FME) increased from … • Our attainment is above both Midlothian and national comparator schools average: • Reading: 90% • Writing: 86% • Maths: 92%

Celebrating Success 2 • Promoting a healthy and active lifestyle within and beyond the life of the school • Midlothian Athletics Champions – outdoor, Runners up – indoor • Midlothian Basketball Championship – runners-up • Before-school, lunch-time, after-school and extra-curricular clubs and activities • Health and wellbeing focus days/weeks for pupils and staff • Partnership with NHS Lothian and Midlothian catering – Breakfast Club • Partnership with parents and Active Schools team

Celebrating Success 3 • Developing confident individuals and successful learners through the expressive arts: • Visiting staff in music, brass and violin • Performances in school concerts and at assembly; Mayfield Nursery Garden Party and St. David’s High School Transition Dance Project for Girls and Archview Lodge Care Home

Celebrating Success 4 • Developing effective contributors and responsible citizens through enterprising and citizenship education: • Butterfly farm in P1/2, P2/3 creating a play, P4/5 raising awareness of endangered animals; Whole school Fair Trade and Easter Fete by P6/7 to name a few • Charity fundraising e.g.RNIB, Hearing Dogs and • Partnership with MISSIO and SCIAF • School Themes: citizenship and Eco Schools

  8. Celebrating Success 5 • Developing pupils as leaders of learning: • Pupil Council • House Captains • JRSOs • Playground Activity Leaders (PALS) • Eco-committee – Silver Award • Fair Trade • Enterprising Learning • Next step – justice and peace group

Celebrating Success 6 • Building Community – Partnership with parents, parish and the local community • Parent Council • Parent activity leaders through active schools clubs • Engaging parents through school events, assemblies, newsletters, workshops, parents’ evenings etc • Regular whole school and class celebrations of the Eucharist with Monsignor Allan and St. David’s parish community • Sacramental preparation of pupils at Primary 3 and Primary 4 stage • Partnership working with local businesses and • Dalkeith-Jarnac 50th anniversary twinning celebrations DVD with local Dalkeith schools

To improve levels of attainment and achievement • School Theme • Implement Midlothian Understanding Number Programme and • Implement more active and inter-active approaches across all areas of learning • Maths Project for Parents • Engage pupils and parents more in their learning process through more informed feedback through PLPs • Revise format for reporting to parents for session 2010/2011 • Introduce GLOW training for staff and pupils

Next steps/Areas for improvement 2health and wellbeing (hwb) • Through weekly activities related to health and well-being e.g. minimum 2hrs physical education every week • Through whole school HWB theme • Through whole school eco-committee • Sustain breakfast club • Establish healthy tuck shop • Continue to promote staff health and wellbeing • Promote partnership working with parents through • Cyber Coach activities – breakfast, lunchtime and after-school clubs

To recognise and support diversity through delivery of an equalities strategy • School Theme • Implement Through the curriculum and in the life and work of the school • Analyse and track performance in literacy and numeracy of key pupil groups • Set-up staff working parties in literacy and numeracy to lead development of Midlothian’s literacy and numeracy strategy for 2009 - 2011

Next steps/Areas for improvement 2 To implement curriculum for excellence (cFe) • Ongoing staff development towards full engagement with CfE experiences and outcomes across all areas of learning, within and beyond the curriculum • Engaging with Midlothian’s CfE strategy • School Theme – Interdisciplinary learning through a whole school theme approach over a 3 year cycle • Implementing Midlothian’s Literacy Strategy • Engaging with Midlothian’s Associated School Group (ASG) Project in Religious Education • Raising pupil and parent awareness of CfE
