Introduction • Pre-Service Training Academy serves as Phase I • Provides new correctional employees with knowledge and skills necessary to become effective at their jobs • OJT serves as Phase II • Minimum 104 hours • Begins when new employee arrives at his/her unit of assignment • Vital bridge between academy training experience and facility work experience
OJT Program4 Main Positions • Primary Field Training Officer (FTO) • Assistant FTO • Resource Trainer • Mentor
OJT Program4 Main Segments • Segment 1 – Basic Unit Operations Training • Segment 2 – Building/Administrative Segregation Assignment Training • 4 different options • Segment 3 – One-on-One shadowing Observation • Segment 4 – Practical Application Competency
One-on-One Shadowing Observation • During your shadowing observation, you are not allowed to work a duty post alone • Your mentor will act as your coach, advisor, and tutor • Mentor is to provide you with constructive feedback and assistance • Mentor ensures you perform the 17 competency tasks • Mentor must document your training info and inform FTO of your performance and areas of concern
Phase III – Shift Mentoring Training • Following completion of Phase II • Once you are assigned to shift, you will be assigned a shift mentor • You will work in direct contact with your shift mentor for first 2 days of shift assignment • Relationship with shift mentor shall continue for minimum of 6 mos.
