THE SAINT OF CZERNOWITZ In 1941 our world came to an end. The world denied us the right to live. We no longer belonged to mankind. In this dark period there was only one man who gave us the strength to carry on: TRAIAN POPOVICI.
He was the newly appointed mayor, a lawyer and writer but most of all a human being, or in the broader meaning of yiddish “a Mentsch”. He saved 20,000 Jews from deportation to Transnistria. Soon after that he was removed from office and forgotten. We will never forget !
Today there is nothing to remind us of Traian Popovici in Czernowitz, Not a street not a plaque not a stone. In Jerusalem, in the Yad Vashem ‘Righteous among Nations’ section, there is a plaque that reads: Traian Popovici, mayor of Czernowitz 1941 saved 20,000 Jews. I was among them. Hardy Breier
