LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FOUNDATIONS PROGRAM Spring 2014
OPENING SESSION/ TEAM BUILDING Facilitator: Brian Jackson, The Orion Trust One of the important goals of the Leadership Academy is to build a strong sense of community and teamwork among participant leaders who represent a diverse cross-section of campus departments and functions. Through a variety of team building exercises, this opening session will help to establish a spirit of community among participants and lay the ground work for productive team interactions in future sessions. In addition, we will establish a case - and a basis - for the benefits of timely and candid feedback.
THE LEADER’S EDGE Facilitator: Dr. Rick Bommelje, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication & President, International Listening Leadership Institute Why are many organizations over-managed and under-led? Why can't some managers and supervisors influence their employees to peak performing levels? One reason is that they have not capitalized on their own leadership potential. This program will acquaint participants with 5 leadership behaviors that make a powerful difference. Participants will also learn the single most important trait of a superior leader. Additionally, participants will learn to lead by example, rather than managing by memo. Specific techniques will be emphasized on how to boost your leadership abilities.
THE SITUATIONAL LEADER Facilitator: Dr. Rick Bommelje, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication & President, International Listening Leadership Institute This program is intended to help participants become more flexible and effective leaders by learning the basics of an "organized common sense" system for getting results with and through other people. Participants will become familiar with 4 powerful leadership styles, and discover the techniques of how and when to use each style.
LEADERSHIP STYLES Facilitator: Mark Freeman, Ph.D., Senior HR Consultant In this session, Mark Freeman debriefs the DiSC assessment with program participants. DiSC is a personal assessment tool used to improve work productivity, teamwork and communication. DiSC is non-judgmental and helps people discuss their behavioral differences. BECOMING A CONFLICT CAPABLE LEADER Facilitator: Mark Freeman, Ph.D., Senior HR Consultant Conflict is an inevitable fact of working life.If not managed properly, conflict can escalate to the point where it can disrupt work and working relationships. This program is intended to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources to effectively address and resolve conflicts that arise within the workplace. Program participants will be required to read the book Becoming a Conflict Competent Leaderin preparation for this session. Learning Objectives/Topics • Assess personal conflict management styles and learn effective approaches to conflict resolution. • Learn how to evaluate conflict situations and determine appropriate intervention strategies. • Learn alternative methods and strategies for mediating and resolving conflict in different situations.
LEADERSHIP & SELF DECEPTION ROUNDTABLE Facilitators: Mark Freeman, Ph.D., Senior HR Consultant; Matt Hawks, HR Director; David Zajchowski, HR Manager; Oriana Jiménez, HR Associate In this session, facilitators will lead a roundtable discussion around the book Leadership & Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box, a required reading for the program. This straightforward book explains how leaders can discover their own self-deceptions and learn how to escape destructive patterns. The authors demonstrate that breaking out of these patterns leads to improved teamwork, commitment, trust, communication, motivation and leadership.
INFLUENCING CRUCIAL CONVERSATIONS Facilitator: Dr. Robert Prescott, SPHR, Associate Professor of Human Resource Management at the Crummer School In this session, Dr. Bob Prescott, discusses skills to help program participants learn how to handle “crucial conversations” — conversations that occur when the stakes are high, emotions run strong, and opinions vary. Crucial conversations skills prepare participants for high-stakes situations with a proven technique; transform anger and hurt feelings into powerful dialogue; make it safe to talk about almost anything; be persuasive, not abrasive; improve nearly every professional and personal relationship; and yield major professional improvements in areas like productivity, quality, safety, diversity, and change management. Learnings are based on the best selling Crucial Conversations series of books.
LEADING IN AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT Facilitator: Glenn Brome, The Brome Company For success in today's multicultural workplace, leaders must create and sustain inclusive work environments that are sensitive to the needs of all workers, and must take full advantage of the productivity potential inherent in a diverse workforce. This program is intended to expands the leader's knowledge of how to have everyone in the area feel like a valued member of the work group. Learning Objectives/Topics: • Recognize the importance of understanding diversity representation as part of the business strategy • Explore the intent vs. impact of our interactions • Practice techniques that raise an our personal consciousness
SERVICE EXCELLENCE ROUNDTABLE In this session, various members of the Service Excellence Team will discuss and interact with program participants on the topic of Service Excellence on Rollins campus. Participants should come prepared to discuss the specific ways Service Excellence takes shape in their respective areas, their observations as to whether or not the culture at Rollins has changed since the inception of the Service Excellence initiative, ideas for keeping the movement going into the future, etc.
LEADERSHIP ROUNDTABLE:The Future of Liberal Arts Education Facilitator: Dr. Lewis Duncan, Ph.D. the 14th President of Rollins College In this session, Dr. Lewis Duncan will discuss the topic, The Future of Liberal Arts Education, and program participants will have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions around this important topic. Participants will also learn about how expectations for the future of liberal arts education as an industry impact current decisions at Rollins College and within the higher education community in general.
The Art of Giving and Receiving Feedback Facilitators: Brian Jackson, The Orion Trust & Mark Freeman, Ph.D., Sr. HR Consultant One of the essential proficiencies an effective leader must possess is the art of giving and receiving feedback. When used effectively, feedback can be a powerful tool in facilitating the learning process and in helping employees achieve at their highest potential, both individually and as a group. Leaders can improve their effectiveness by learning how to receive useful feedback to enhance their own performance. This program is intended to assist participants develop the competencies needed to give and receive feedback effectively. Learning Objectives/Topics • Learn how to give and accept feedback • Practice and experience the impact of providing and receiving feedback • Learn how use feedback to improve individual and group performance
Leadership PROGRAM Debrief & GRADUATION Facilitators: Brian Jackson, The Orion Trust & Mark Freeman, Ph.D., Sr. HR Consultant In this wrap up session participants will be asked to share with one another the program elements which have had the most meaningful impact on them and what changes they are making in their supervisory roles as a result. This session will also serve as a graduation reception to recognize participants for their completion of the program.
