  1. LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FOUNDATIONS PROGRAM Fall 2017

OPENING SESSION/ TEAM BUILDING Facilitator:  Brian Jackson, The Orion Trust One of the important goals of the Leadership Academy is to build a strong sense of community and teamwork among  participant leaders who represent a diverse cross-section of campus departments and functions.   Through a variety of team building exercises, this opening session will help to establish a spirit of community among participants and lay the ground work for productive team interactions in future sessions. In addition, we will establish a case - and a basis - for the benefits of timely and candid feedback.

  3. THE LEADER’S EDGE Facilitator: Dr. Rick Bommelje, Ph.D., Professor of Communication & President, International Listening Leadership Institute Why are many organizations over-managed and under-led?  Why can't some managers and supervisors influence their employees to peak performing levels?  One reason is that they have not capitalized on their own leadership potential. This program will acquaint participants with 5 leadership behaviors that make a powerful difference.  Participants will also learn the single most important trait of a superior leader.  Additionally, participants will learn to lead by example, rather than managing by memo.   Specific techniques will be emphasized on how to boost your leadership abilities.

  4. THE SITUATIONAL LEADER Facilitator: Dr. Rick Bommelje, Ph.D., Professor of Communication & President, International Listening Leadership Institute This program is intended to help participants become more flexible and effective leaders by learning the basics of an "organized common sense" system for getting results with and through other people.  Participants will become familiar with 4 powerful leadership styles, and discover the techniques of how and when to use each style.

  5. LEADERSHIP STYLES Facilitator: Mark Freeman, Ph.D., Senior HR Consultant In this session, Mark Freeman debriefs the DiSC assessment with program participants. DiSC is a personal assessment tool used to improve work productivity, teamwork and communication. DiSC is non-judgmental and helps people discuss their behavioral differences. The DiSC program asks a series of questions that produce a detailed report about your personality and behavior. Click here to learn more about the DiSC Profile.

LEADERS NAVIGATING CAMPUS CLIMATE Facilitators:  Abby Hollern, Director - Center for Inclusion & Campus Involvement & Destinee Lott, Associate Director of Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives What is campus climate and why does it matter? This interactive session will inform participants of the current attitudes, behaviors, and standards of students, staff, and faulty in relation to diversity and inclusion on campus. Intergroup dialogue skills and techniques will be utilized to discover how leaders can dialogue across differences.

  7. LEADERSHIP & EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Facilitator:  Susan A. Bach, Ph.D. Do you know that emotional intelligence (EQ) is a more significant predictor of career success than IQ? Explore why EQ is such an important component ineffective leadership and how to enhance your EQ.

  8. BECOMING A CONFLICT CAPABLE LEADER Facilitator: Mark Freeman, Ph.D., Senior HR Consultant Conflict is an inevitable fact of working life. If not managed properly, conflict can escalate to the point where it can disrupt work and working relationships.  This program is intended to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources to effectively address and resolve conflicts that arise within the workplace. Learning Objectives/Topics • Assess personal conflict management styles and learn effective approaches to conflict resolution. • Learn how to evaluate conflict situations and determine appropriate intervention strategies. • Learn alternative methods and strategies for mediating and resolving conflict in different situations.

  9. CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION Facilitator:  Susan A. Bach, Ph.D. The purpose of this interactive session is to provide concepts, exercises and techniques to help participants unleash the creativity within them and open themselves up to embracing innovation, which often leads to positive workplace change. When we are comfortable with our own creativity and open to creativity in others, the work environment tends to become more positive, enjoyable, productive and service oriented. Learning Objectives/Topics: • Enhance awareness of their creativity • Learn the most prevalent behaviors that stifle creativity in the workplace • Experiment with techniques to unleash creativity • Create a creativity action step to continue opening themselves and their workplace to new possibilities

  10. ADAPTING TO AND LEADING CHANGE Facilitator:  Susan A. Bach, Ph.D. The purpose of this session is to help participants develop a broader perspective on managing change and helping others enhance their receptiveness to change. The session focuses on awareness of why people resist change and how that can manifest itself in the workplace. In addition, the module facilitates developing a personal strategy to become more receptive to embracing change as well as creating a culture in which staff view the positive side of, and support, change initiatives. Learning Objectives/Topics: • Enhance awareness of how they are impacted by change • Learn the common negative responses to change and how they impact the workplace • Discuss techniques to build a team culture receptive to change initiatives • Develop a strategy to incorporate these practices into their relationship building and leadership style

The Art of Giving and Receiving Feedback Facilitators:  Brian Jackson, The Orion Trust & Mark Freeman, Ph.D., Sr. HR Consultant One of the essential proficiencies an effective leader must possess is the art of giving and receiving feedback.  When used effectively, feedback can be a powerful tool in facilitating the learning process and in helping employees achieve at their highest potential, both individually and as a group.  Leaders can improve their effectiveness by learning how to receive useful feedback to enhance their own performance.  This program is intended to assist participants develop the competencies needed to give and receive feedback effectively. Learning Objectives/Topics • Learn how to give and accept feedback • Practice and experience the impact of providing and receiving feedback • Learn how use feedback to improve individual and group performance

  12. Leadership PROGRAM Debrief & GRADUATION Facilitators:  TBD In this wrap up session participants will be asked to share with one another the program elements which have had the most meaningful impact on them and what changes they are making in their supervisory roles as a result.  This session will also serve as a graduation reception to recognize participants for their completion of the program.
