The Advisement Process • Advisement Requirements • Advisement is not required in ME. However, it is available to all students. • Be prepared for an advisement session. Always bring: • A list of completed classes and a plan of what classes are taking next. • A list of specific questions which you need answered. • Advisement materials are available on the web. Please use these resources! • www.me.gatech.edu/undergraduate/index.shtml • The advisors are very busy during registration and the two weeks of midterm advisement. Plan your advisement session early to beat the crowds! • Advisors are available during the summer and between semesters. We are 12 month employees.
The Advisement Process • Midterm Advisement • Midterm advisement is available to all students. • Midterm advisement is required for students with >2 midterm U’s. • Students will be notified via email if they are required to come for midterm advisement. • Students who are required to come for midterm advisement and do not show up will have a hold placed on their registration. • Advisement Communication • E-Mail is the primary method of communication used by advisors. • E-mails will be sent to all students with important information pertaining to Registration, Midterm Advisement, Tutoring, etc. • Other Information • All required ME classes are offered every semester. • Summer semester is shorter (10 weeks compared to 15 weeks in fall and spring) so students generally take less classes.
Holds Campus departments can place registration holds on students. A registration hold will prevent a student from: Dropping courses Withdrawing from school Registering for classes The department that places the hold is the only department that can remove the hold. ME holds will not be removed over the phone. You must come in to see your advisor to have your ME hold removed. How to View Holds All holds can be viewed in OSCAR Log on to Buzzport, www.buzzport.gatech.edu Select Secured Access (OSCAR) Select Student Services & Financial Aid SelectStudent Records Select View Holds from the bottom of the screen General Registration Information

View all pre-reqs on classes before registration begins. View all notes on classes before registration begins. Restrictions on Classes
How to Find Restrictions, Pre-reqs and Notes about Classes Log on to Buzzport, www.buzzport.gatech.edu Select Secured Access (OSCAR) Select Student Services & Financial Aid. Select Registration. Select Look Up Classes. Select the Term and press Submit. Follow the on-screen instructions to select the class which you want to view. The classes will then be listed on that screen. Click on the hyper linked CRN Number of the class. This screen is called the Class Schedule Listing. This screen contains any notes specific to this class or titles of special topics classes. Click on the hyper linked Title of the Class. This screen is called the Detailed Class Information. This screen lists pre-requisites, majors, campus and class restrictions. Restrictions on Classes
Notes about Classes Restrictions Pre-Requisites (May be hard to read so use the curriculum guide when possible)
CAMPUS RESTRICTION This course is being taught somewhere other than on the Main Campus in Atlanta (Studies Abroad, Video, etc). CLASS RESTRICTION The enrollment in this course is restricted by class (Freshman, Sophomore, etc.). You can ask for a class restriction permit. CLOSED SECTION Class is full. You need to ask for an overload. CORQ_COURSE_XXXX REQ Co-requisites courses must be taken at the same time. You need to register for both courses on the same DUPL CRSE WITH SEC-XXXXX The computer system looks at subject code (ie. MATH, ENGL, etc.) and course number (2501, 1502, etc.), but not section number. If you are trying to take 2 courses with the same subject code and course number, such as MGT 4803 A and MGT 4803 B, you need a duplicate course permit. LEVEL RESTRICTION (Undergrad Students) An undergraduate student may take a graduate level course with the permission of the department teaching the course, and a min GPA of 2.7 or a GPA required by the department offering the class. Registration Errors
LINK ERROR XX REQUIRED Certain lectures and labs are "linked" together. You must register for both the lecture and lab in the same commit. Most departments list the lecture section as a single letter and the lab as the same letter followed by a number (Example: the lecture is section "A" and the corresponding lab sections are "A1", "A2", etc). MAJOR RESTRICTION Only students in certain majors are allowed to register for this course. MAXIMUM HOURS EXCEEDED You are trying to take more hours than allowed. Reduce the number of hours on your schedule. PERMIT REQUIRED The enrollment in the course is restricted. You need to ask for a permit. PREQ & TEST SCORE-ERROR You do not have the pre-requisites for the course. You can talk to the department about a pre-requisite override permit. TIME CONFLICT WITH XXXXX You are trying to take 2 courses that meet at the same time or have overlapping times. Registration Errors
PDF files are available to help you understand and fix your registration problems. www.me.gatech.edu/undergraduate/registration.shtml#errors Campus Restriction Class Restriction Closed Section Corq_Course_XXXXReq DuplCrse with Sec-XXXXX Grade Mode (Letter Grade, Pass/Fail or Audit) Link Error XX Required Major Restrictions Maximum Hours Exceeded Permit Required Preq & Test Score-Error Time Conflict with XXXXX Fixing Registration Errors
What are Overrides? Overrides are the way a department can allow you to take their class if you do meet their restrictions or pre-requisites. Ex: If you change your major from AE to ME and you took the AE version of dynamics, you will get a pre-req error when registering for classes which require ME dynamics as a pre-req. Only the department offering the class can issue overrides. Restricted Class Permit Override If you cannot register for a class because of a major restriction or class restriction, then you need a permit. If a class is set up as permit only, then you need a permit. Overload Override If you cannot register for a class because it is full, then you need an overload. Pre-Requisite Override If you do not have the correct prerequisites or co-requisites for a class, you need a prerequisite override. If you need an overload, permit or prerequisite override, make sure you understand what you need! If you ask for the wrong type of override, you will still not be able to register for classes. Overloads, Permits and Pre-req Overrides
How to Request an Override (Permits, Overload & Pre-req) Log on to Buzzport, www.buzzport.gatech.edu Select Secured Access (OSCAR) Select Student Services & Financial Aid. Select Registration. Select Registration Override Request. Follow the instructions to submit a permit, pre-req override or an overload request. If the class does not show up on OSCAR, go to: http://www.registrar.gatech.edu/registration/oprequest.php Overloads, Permits and Pre-req Overrides
Monitoring your override requests Students can view their permit / overload status by following the directions below: Log on to Buzzport, www.buzzport.gatech.edu Select Secured Access (OSCAR). Select Student Services & Financial Aid. Select Registration. Select Registration Override Request Status. Students may view their granted permit / overload information by following the directions below: Log on to Buzzport, www.buzzport.gatech.edu Select Secured Access (OSCAR) Select Student Services & Financial Aid. Select Registration. Select Registration Status. Overloads, Permits and Pre-req Overrides
If you are given a permit, overload or pre-req override, you must still register for the class. You must use the Add/Drop option in OSCAR to register for the class. Log on to Buzzport, www.buzzport.gatech.edu Select Secured Access (OSCAR) Select Student Services & Financial Aid. Select Registration. Select Add or Drop Classes. Select the Term and press Submit. Type in the CRN number of the class and add it to your schedule. An override does not register you for the class. The class must be added to your schedule during an active registration time. Only you can register yourself for a class. Overloads, Permits and Pre-req Overrides
