  1. Supporting Flexible Course Design by developing a Template for Online Units By Lisa Mann & Andrew Doig 14th June 2012 (Supported by SSU Research & Enterprise Funding 2012) June 2012

  2. Outline In this presentation we will cover the following: • ProjectGoal • Development, Initial Reflection &Implementation • Evaluation • Reflection & Enhancement June 2012

  3. Goal The idea of using a template structure was aimed at achieving: • The creation of consistently high quality, engaging online distance learning Professional Development Units • To set a ‘benchmark’ for how efficiently and effectively online courses can be developed and delivered. • Ease of process when developing and running this type of course • Assistance for tutors creating the transition from face-to-face into online teaching June 2012

  4. Development, Initial Reflection & Implementation Template structure: • Developed via a collaborative project from subject Academic and Instructional Developer as part of Strategic Development Project Funding. • Industry research, discussions with academics, learning technologists, instructional developer and students. • 12 week template structure – 100 hours of learning – 10 Academic Credits • Fixed ‘events’at strategic points such as: • Subject Specific Scheduled Learning Sessions • Bookable one-to-one tutorials • Online & Offline Activities • Study partner meetings • Consistent formative/summative assessment June 2012

  5. Development, Initial Reflection & Implementation • Academic subject tutors populate the structure with teaching materials/content. • Usability lab testing with students - followed by enhancement and further development/refinement of template. • IMPORTANT NOTE – Community of Learning should be encouraged June 2012

  6. Implementation Usability lab testing – responses from students “I found the course structure very easy to follow. The tools set up to help the learning process such as the reflective journal & the wiki help you stay organised & the scheduled learning sessions keep you interacting with your tutor so you do not feel stranded.” “It was good to be able to do independent study at your own time & use the forum to interact.” “I think it would be useful for the system to save where you're up to on the weeks tasks. Because once you exit you have to click through all the bits you've already done, which is a bit frustrating.” “It doesn't actually tell you how to find the forum again without going through the tasks again and clicking on the link.” June 2012

  7. Evaluation Tested through the use of: • Usability lab – A group of Level 6 students • Full test run of one PDU – A group of professional learners – currently collating feedback from this group. • Ongoing feedback and adjustments with repeated iterations June 2012

  8. Reflection & Enhancement • Employability & Professional Development • Employer & Industry engagement • Lifelong Learning • Extend the use of multi-media/new media • Review number & timing of participatory‘events’ • Expand research to explore mobile delivery using template approach • Make the PDU model available to a wider range of subject areas June 2012

  9. Reflection cont’d… “The content wasn’t in any way repetitive but it also didn’t drag on. It was concise and extremely interesting. I would definitely recommend it, I certainly would like to take it!” Royah Moharrer, Level 6 Student. • This comment indicates a balance of depth of information and speed of progress through the activities. This subject also stated that: “The activities gave the opportunity for reflection on what you’d learned. It also made you think about the task you’d just completed ensuring you’d taken in the information properly. Which with an online course can be difficult so it was really beneficial.” Christina Stone, Level 6 Student. June 2012

  10. ‘Real’ Online Unit has now recruited successfully and is running smoothly with a tutor who is not experienced in online delivery! June 2012
