Philadelphia Convention Called to reform the AoC Delegates decide that the Aoc is so bad, they need to scrap it and start over from scratch Founding fathers (James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, etc) work from May- September 1787 on new Constitution Issues: state representation in national government- New Jersey and Virginia Plans eventually lead to the Connecticut Compromise and the 3/5 Compromise Delegates agreed on new Constitution but have to have unanimous ratification by each state
Federalists (Hamilton, Madison, Jay) and Anti Federalists argued about the Constitution in the Federalist Papers Eventually, the Constitution was ratified once the Bill of Rights (first ten amendments) were added (1789) Amending the constitution requires that 2/3 of each house approve the law and sent to states for approval. George Washington becomes first president- biggest fears were political parties, foreign entanglements and too many amendments to the Constitution

Bill of Rights 1st- right to press, religion, congregation, petition and speech 2nd- right to bear arms 3rd- no quartering of troops 4th – no unreasonable search and seizure 5th- rights of the accused (no self incrimination, double jeopardy, etc) 6th- right to a fair and speedy public trial 7th- right to a jury trial in civil affairs 8th- no cruel and unusual punishment or exorbitant fines 9th- people have rights not addressed in the Consitution 10th- state’s rights
