  1. Enlightened Egoism Egoism is a standard that focuses on self-interest. Decisions based on egoism provide the most favorable consequences for that party regardless of the consequence to other parties. Types of egoism: Enlightened egoism Psychological egoism

  2. Enlightened Egoism: 1. Self-interest may be short-run or long-run. Long-run self-interest is often called enlightened self-interest because it considers both the direct and the indirect consequences of an act over an extended period of time. 2. It is abide by professional codes of ethics, control pollution, avoid cheating on taxes, help create jobs, and support community projects. 3. An enlightened egoist might call management’s attention to a co-worker who is making false accounting reports, but only to safeguard the company’s reputation and thus the egoist’s own job security. 4. Enlightened egoist could become whistle-blower and report misconduct to a regulatory agency to receive a reward for exposing misconduct. Ex: IBM has a policy of donating or reducing the cost of computers to educational institutions. The company receives the tax breaks for donations of equipment, which reduce the costs of its philanthropy.
