Enlightened Egoism: 1. Self-interest may be short-run or long-run. Long-run self-interest is often called enlightened self-interest because it considers both the direct and the indirect consequences of an act over an extended period of time. 2. An enlightened egoist might call management’s attention to a co-worker who is making false accounting reports, but only to safeguard the company’s reputation and thus the egoist’s own job security. 4.
