1. Micro Experimental Laboratory (MEL) - Professional The most advanced psychology experiment development environment available for IBM PCs!
2. What are we going to do? Introduction
What is MEL, overview and layout, system requirements, alternatives to MEL, the future of MEL.

3. What is MEL? A DOS-based authoring tool allowing you to create, run, and analyze reaction time, questionnaire, and text comprehension experiments.
You can use one of theirs, or create your own.

4. Hows it work? You fill in a series of forms that describe the experiment. They identifying the procedure, stimuli, and data recording. Program then generates the computer code.
Users can input their own computer code for more versatility.
5. Experiment form
6. Trial Form
7. Frame form
8. Overview of the basic formsThe forms are arranged in a hierarchical manner Experiment form - Basic outline of experiment.
Abstract, specify IVs and DVs, and the events.
Trial form - Parameters of the trials
Presentation of frames
Block form organizes trials
Frame form - Specifies display of stimuli
What, where, how, when, and collecting response.
Insert form - Contains stimuli presented in the frames.
Code form - Input users code
9. Overview of the forms - Putting it together into a lexical decision task Experiment form - abstract, IV and DV, events
Frame form - instructions
Trial form - selecting stimuli, # of trials
Frame form - present focal point
Frame form - present word/nonword, collect response
Give feedback
Frame form - Thanks for participating.
10. More important info Collecting Responses:
1) Keyboard -
single or multiple keystrokes.
2) Serial Response Box -
* better RT accuracy.
3) Voice Key -
RT for vocal response and record the response.
4) Mouse
Cant collect RTs. Types of Stimuli:
1) Simple text
fonts, languages
2) Questionnaires
3) Auditory stimuli (*.wav files)
4) Graphics files and objects
12. What do I do after the data is in? Once the experiment is created, you can transfer the files to multiple machines to collect your data.
MERGE form:
* All subjects on a machine are saved to the same data file.
* MERGE form allows you to merge these into a master data file ANALYZE form:
* Can do statistical analyses and graphing within MEL.
Dont bother.
* Can convert the data file into SPSS or SAS formats.
For SPSS, it creates an ASCII file.
13. System Requirements Minimum (to collect data):
286 processor
1.44Mb floppy drive
EGA video card and monitor
MS-DOS 5.0
For data collection, several addition MEL files are required. Recommended:
486 Processor
1.44Mb floppy
SVGA video card w/1Mb RAM and monitor.
MS-DOS 6.22 or WIN95 MS-DOS mode.
Expansion slot for audio card.
Serial port SRB
14. Some things to keep in mind Data cannot be collected from w/in Windows or over a network; difficult to compile w/in Win.
Only PC.
Versatility comes from using the Code form.
Excellent tutorials to get you started.
Preprogrammed experiments are very handy.
Technical support (from website and personnel) is good.
Manuals are a MUST, but not always user-friendly.
15. What experience has taught me about MEL professional
16. Alternatives to MEL MEL Lab - A scaled -down version; demonstration-oriented, with some data collection.
MediaLab - Empirisoft; Developed at Ohio State U.
Version 3.0 (PC only)
Runs in Windows 95/98, so creating MediaLabRT for greater accuracy.

17. Alternatives to MEL (cont) Experiment Generators - a listing of multiple experiment generators.
E-Prime
18. E-Prime Successor to MEL and PsyScope.
Consists of a graphical interface using Windows, as well as users ability to write their own code.
Experiment construct and data manipulation is PC only; data collection is PC or Mac. Mac Version is in the works.
Currently beta testing ($$), with no definite release date available.
MEL will be unsupported after Jan. 1, 2000.
