  3. Osidge Primary School – Current Situation • 2 form entry school – 60 Reception pupils are admitted each year • Popular and over-subscribed • For September 2013 – there were 239 on-time applications for Osidge Primary School. There were 60 places available.

  4. The Proposal • To expand Osidge Primary School by one form of entry to become a permanent three-form entry school. The school would go from admitting 60 pupils in reception each year to admitting 90. • The first permanent cohort of 90 reception pupils would be admitted in 2015/16. • The school would grow by one class (30 pupils) each year for 7 years. • The permanent three-form entry school would eventually cater for 630 pupils in 2021/22.

  5. The Proposal – Why? • Across Barnet, there has been a 28% increase in births between 2002/03 and 2010/11. • In the local area, births have increased by 29% – higher than the Barnet average.

The Proposal – Why? • Regeneration Schemes • Proposed Cat Hill Scheme • 231 residential units to be provided on the old Middlesex University site • Within 1 mile of Osidge Primary School • Ladderswood Estate • 240 new homes provided, in addition to replacing existing units • Within 2 miles of Osidge Primary School • New homes attract new families into the area creating additional demand for Barnet school places.

  7. Future Reception Demand • All the schools in the East Barnet, Brunswick Park and Oakleighwards are oversubscribed with no surplus capacity. • Since 2011-12, at least 2 temporary classes have been required in the area each year. • Pupils projections show a continuing need for permanent capacity in the area.

Why Osidge Primary School? • Popular and over-subscribed • A good or better educational offer • In February 2012, Osidge Primary School was rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in all categories • Site • Osidge Primary School is going to work with architects to design an extension which will remain in keeping with the tone of the school

What are the benefits for Osidge? • More places for children in the community • Investment in the school building • Significant additional funding due to increased numbers of pupils • Additional opportunities for staff professional development • Retention of high quality staff • Increased capacity to develop leadership team • Flexibility with larger year group teams

What are the challenges? • Parental preference for size of school • Ensuring that school ethos is unchanged • Equal opportunities for children • Minimising impact on the outside spaces • Timetabling • Lunchtimes • Development of communal spaces • Managing the construction phase • Access, traffic and parking • Staffing

  12. The Proposal - Next Steps • Any expansion is subject to planning processes and approvals (this is a separate consultation process) • Need to develop design for the expanded premises – will involve school community • Consultation with the local community - timetable
