Pupils’ behaviour in lessons, in the playground, when travelling around the school is of a very high standard. They are courteous and well-mannered at all times. Relationships between pupils and adults and pupils and other pupils are very good, and there is a high degree of respectfulness consistently on display.
Pupils demonstrate a love of reading and talk about the books they read with enthusiasm. Pupils are heard to read regularly and the books they read matched to their needs and abilities. Pupils made good progress during the great majority of lessons seen…This is because they found their lessons interesting.
Pupils are particularly skilled at working together, as witnessed through the way they co-operated with their learning partners in many lessons.
Pupils feel very safe in the school and feel that bullying and other forms of poor behaviour do not exist in the school. Pupils are clear that this is a “no-bullying” school.
Homework is used effectively to practise skills and apply knowledge. Pupils interviewed by the inspectors said that they enjoyed their lessons and felt supported and helped by their teachers. Pupils enjoy school and make comments such as, “We love being here.”
WHAT DID OFSTED SAY WE NEEDED TO DO TO IMPROVE? • Continue to improve pupils’ achievements in maths; • Continue to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Key Stage One to match the standards in the Early Years Foundation Stage and in Key Stage Two; • Continue to improve marking and feedback in Key Stage One.
WHAT ACTIONS HAVE WE TAKEN? • We have a new, experienced teacher in Year One; • We have improved the marking policy for Key Stage One; • We currently judge teaching in Key Stage One as consistently good; • We continue to improve maths teaching and learning throughout the school.
ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHS JULY 2013 • Year 2: L2+ for Halling was 93% compared to 92% for Medway and 91% national average; • Year 2: L2B+ for Halling was 78% compared to 78% Medway and 78% national average;
Year 6: L4+ 84% Halling compared to 80% for Medway and 84% national average; 90% of Halling’s Year 6 pupils made the expected progress in maths compared to 83% Medway and 88% national average.

Pupils quickly become independent readers and writers….. There has been a significant improvement in the proportions of pupils achieving the expected standard in the Year 1 phonic screening check so that the school’s attainment is well above average.
All staff involved in the teaching of reading demonstrate good understanding of the objectives and steps for learning in each session. The teaching of early reading is well organised with good routines so that time is not wasted.
One of the school’s current priorities is to promote the enjoyment of reading and it is very evident from the classrooms and corridor displays that reading and literacy are highly valued and promoted. OFSTED NOVEMBER 2013
