Interoperability between EELA and OurGrid Alexandre Duarte CERN and UFCG 1st EELA Conference Santiago, 4-5/09/2006 www.eu-eela.org
Outline • Overview of OurGrid • Interoperability • What OurGrid can offer to EELA? • What EELA can offer to OurGrid? • Status report • Next steps Santiago, 1st EELA Conference, 4-5.09.2006
OurGrid • Is a free-to-join peer-to-peer grid • Each site represents a peer in the system • There is no paperwork to join it • Targeted to small labs and research groups • Is in production since December 2004 • Approximately 300 machines spread around 20 sites • Is open source (GPL) and is available at www.ourgrid.org • Was developed at Universidade Federal de Campina Grande (Brazil) in colaboration with HP Brazil R&D Santiago, 1st EELA Conference, 4-5.09.2006
OurGrid Architecture User Interface Application Scheduling Sandboxing Site Manager Grid-wide Resource Sharing Santiago, 1st EELA Conference, 4-5.09.2006
What OurGrid can offer to EELA? • Support for Opportunistic Computing • Use shared resources when they are available • Enable sites with shared resources to join EELA • Can be an interesting contribution to EGEE • Visibility among OurGrid partners • New applications • Climate forecast and management of water resources • SegHidro (http://seghidro.lsd.ufcg.edu.br) • Inteligent control of oil pumping systems • SmartPumping (http://sp.lsd.ufcg.edu.br/) Santiago, 1st EELA Conference, 4-5.09.2006
What EELA can offer to OurGrid? • Visibility among EELA partners • A good oportunity for an international collaboration Santiago, 1st EELA Conference, 4-5.09.2006
Status Report • 1st Interoperability Meeting • 31/08 and 01/09 • Already have architectural proposals to enable: • Using OurGrid-managed resources to execute jobs submitted to EELA • Forward the jobs to an OurGrid broker • Execute the jobs using resources (shared or not) managed by an OurGrid peer • Extends gLite to support Opportunistic Computing • Using EELA resources to execute jobs submitted to OurGrid • Restricted to users already authorized to use EELA resources Santiago, 1st EELA Conference, 4-5.09.2006
Next Steps • EELA • Implementation of a proof of concept prototype to execute gLite jobs using OurGrid-managed resources • 4 months (one person, 20% dedication) • OurGrid • Elaboration and submission of a funding proposal to contract human resources to implement the solution • Deadline: 18 September Santiago, 1st EELA Conference, 4-5.09.2006
