Confirmation Bias By: Kevin Murphy
I knew it! You said I was wrong, but I knew it! Dude, chill out. What are you talking about?
It happened! Remember that article that said a great power would lose its entire population in a sudden attack? Well, hackers just took down Playstation network! That’s 70 million people’s personal information, all stolen! The article was right, and you said it was garbage! …You’re being serious, aren’t you?
Well, of course! This proves the article was true! Dude, you do this way too much. You’ve got a really bad Confirmation Bias, you know that? What’s that supposed to mean?
Alright, you read that article, and Sony just lost all the personal information of everyone in Playstation Network. What if it had been Xbox Live, or Netflix, or something else? Then it would still be right! Yea, sure. And what if nothing at all had happened? Well, something would eventually come up.
See, that’s the problem! You just look for ways to prove something that you think is true as true, with something that’s probably not even related to what you’re trying to prove! Yes, conspiracy theories are easy to believe, and sometimes one is right, but the majority are wrong. Its conspiracy theorists like you, who think that a Mayan calendar that ran out of space predicts the end of the world, who take even the smallest semblance of something resembling what you believe, and pass it off as irrefutable truth! I…I still don’t get it.
Alright, fine. What do you think of the moon landing? Are you kidding me? It was a total fake. And what proof do you have to back that up? I saw a website that pointed out all the flaws in the video.
Pointed out by some guy who likes to stir controversy with Windows Movie Maker, probably? Alright then, how about these files from the archive of NASA, detailing the planning, training, costs…Everything involved with the landing? What do you say to that? Other than ‘How did you hack into NASA’s archives?!?’ Some questions don’t need to be asked. That is one of them. Well, obviously NASA planted all that to make it seem legitimate!
So you believe some anonymous guy who could’ve edited the moon landing video to contain flaws, but you won’t believe the documented archives of the organization that made the landing possible? Well… Uhh… When you say it like that, it sounds bad, but… That’s what I’m talking about! You’ve never believed the landing ever happened, and when you saw a website that supported your opinion, you regard that as fact, no matter how discredible the source is!
But then, when given credible evidence that goes against what you think, you just disregard it! The only facts you think are true are the ones that confirm what you already believe! Wow. You’re… You’re right…
Good, I’m glad we see things my way. Hey, wait! Who says you’re automatically right? How about we ask more people, see if any agree with me, and then- Dude, listen to yourself. …Yea, I’ve really gotta work on this.
