Objective: ... present dramatic interpretations of experiences, stories Voices: Narrator 1, Narrator 2, Farmer, Piglet, Queen, King A Readers’ Theater Introduction Narrator 1: Once upon a time, a poor farmer pulled his cartload of straw home from the market. Narrator 2: On the hay on the back of the cart, a tiny pink piglet sat quietly. Farmer: I wish I had been able to sell my little piglet. Piglet: Nobody wanted to buy me. Sniff. Farmer: It’s okay, little piglet. I’ll take care of you as long as I can. Piglet: You are a good farmer. Farmer: I’ll name you Pigmella. That sounds like a good name for a pig. Piglet: Where are we? Farmer: That is the castle of the king and queen. Narrator 1: It just so happened that the queen, herself, was on the balcony of the castle. Narrator 2: In her arms, the queen held her newborn baby daughter. She spoke to her baby: Queen: You will be well taken care of. You have seven nannies. Sniff. Sniff. What is that smell? Yuck! I must find a nanny to change your diaper! Narrator 1: Being in such a hurry, the queen dropped her baby over the edge of the balcony! Narrator 2: The baby fell down, down, and landed on a loose board in the farmer’s cart.

  2. A Readers’ Theater Introduction, p. 2 Narrator 1: The piglet sat at the other end of the board. Piglet: When the baby landed, I was shot high up into the air. I landed in the princess’s cradle on the balcony! Queen: When I saw that my baby had turned into a pig, I screamed. EEEEEEEEKKK! Narrator 2: The king was sure he knew what had happened and declared: King: A bad fairy had been here. She was not invited to our baby’s christening, so she got revenge. She turned our baby into a piglet! Things like this happen all the time in stories. Queen: Sniff. Like Sleeping Beauty? Sniff. King: Exactly. Narrator 1: Meanwhile, the farmer had arrived home and was surprised when his wife found a baby girl lying in the hay where the piglet should have been. Farmer: A good fairy has turned the tiny piglet into a baby girl. Narrator 2: The two rejoiced to have the child they had always wanted. Farmer: This kind of thing happens all the time in stories. Her name shall be Pigmella. Narrator 1: The piglet became the royal princess, Priscilla. Narrator 2: The lives of both Pigmella and Priscilla became very different.
