GLONASS Constellation Feb 2012 • 1976 Start to develop • 1996 Achieved FOC with 24 satellites • 2001 Degrade down to 7 operational satellites • 2012 Feb: • 31 in constellation, 24 operational • 1 commissioning, 1 flight test, 3 spare, 2 maintenances • Last launch 28 Nov 2011 (Glonass M) • Next launch scheduled for June 2012, one Glonass K1 N1
GLONASS Availability Note: availability is calculated using a current almanac for the 24 hours period as percentage of time during which the PDOP≤6 is valid at mask angles ≥5°, where PDOP is a position (three-dimensional) dilution of precision. Step of calculation: 4 minutes in duration and 1 degree over the surface

Galileo Status • Two test satellites on orbit • GIOVE-A (2005), GIOVE-B (2008) • To reserve frequencies set aside for Galileo • In-Orbit-Validation (IOV) • 4 IOV satellites • Aim at qualifying space, ground and user segments • ‘Thijs’ and ‘Natalia’ launched successfully in 21st Oct 2011, ‘Milena’ and ‘Adam’ will follow in 2012 • E1, E5 and E6 capabilities • Initial-Operational-Capability (IOC) • Planned around 2015 • 4 IOV satellites + another 14 • Full-Operational-Capability (FOC) • Planned around 2020 • 30 satellites (27 operational + 3 spare)
Beidou / Compass Status • Beidou I • Originally Beidou military system • Ultimately global civil/mil capability • ICD released in Dec 2011 • 10 satellites launched: 1 MEO, 4 GEO, 5 IGSO • Beidou II / Compass I • Operational 2012 • Regional: China & nearby area, passive positioning • 5 GEO, 5 IGSO, 4 MEO • Proposed launched: 1 GEO in Feb, 2 MEO in June, 1 MEO in Aug, 1 IGSO in Dec • Beidou III / Compass II • Operational 2020 • Global, passive positioning capability • 27 MEO, 5 GEO, 3 IGSO
Beidou / Compass Application • Fishery • Transportation • Water conservancy • Meteorology • Forest fire prevention • Timing • Disaster Prevention and mitigation • Soil monitoring
QZSS Status • QZSS is designed so that at least one satellite (of the three) can always be observed at high elevation angles (>60°) in Japan • Three inclined geosynchronous orbits, with same ground track • First launch Sept 11 2010 – “Michibiki” operational June 11
Other future GNSS • India • GAGAN – Experimental phase • An SBAS like WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS • IRNSS – Concept and planning phase • Autonomous system with 7 satellites • 4 IGSO and 3 GEO • China • Chinese Area Positioning System (CAPS) • China’s Regional Navigation Satellite System • Similar signal structure to GPS but at C band (4GHz) • Transponder based system, with Nav data generated on the ground. • Mixture of IGSO and GEOs (use of retired comms sats)
