Why is it Endangered? How Can We Help? Leopards • Leopards are endangered because there has been a decline in their prey due to habitat destruction. Their habits are also in danger. • Farmers trap and poison leopards because they find them a threat to their livestock. • Commercial hunting can be a problem too, many poachers hunt for fun and for fur. • We can help leopards advocating to protect their environments and establishing wildlife areas to keep them away from harm. • Leopards’ habitats are being destroyed and we can help protect them by doing two easy things – recycle and turning off lights when we aren’t using them. • If we recycle, we can decrease the amount of trees being cut down which contributes to their habitats being destroyed. • When electricity is being used, power plants emit harmful pollutants into the atmosphere which pollutes the overall environment. Appearance Where Do Leopards Live? What Do Leopards Eat? • Leopards have many different color coats of fur. They vary from light brown to a rusty yellowish color. Some leopards can even be 100% black. Typically, leopards have distinct spots on them. • There are over 30 different species of leopards. • Male leopards weigh between 30-70 kilograms, while female leopards weigh between 28 to 60 kilograms. • Leopards can be found in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. • In Africa, Leopards can be found across the majority of the African continent, excluding the Sahara Desert Region. • They can live in climates and areas varying from rainforests to excessively dry habitats. • Leopards eat a variety of different types of animals including fish, monkeys, rodents, reptiles, gazelles, amphibians, wild pigs and birds. • Leopards kill their prey and bring them up in to trees to consume in order to keep their food away from other predators. http://courseweb.lis.illinois.edu/~henry11/490TEL/WebDesign/africa-worldaware.jpg
