  2. Exile and return • The Jews called their time in Babylon an exile • Met on weekly day of Worship called the Sabbath • Meet at Synagogues to discuss religion and history

  3. Why Did Jews Return to Judah? • The Persians defeated Chaldeans and permitted the Jews to return • They rebuilt Jerusalem • Still under Persian control

  4. What is in the Hebrew Bible • 5 books make up the Torah • Hebrew bible contains the Torah and 34 other books

  5. The Jews Look to the future • Describe God’s plan for Peaceful return • Believed that evil and suffering would be replaced goodness (shared by Christians and Muslims)

Macabees • In 168 Greek ruler named Antiochus controlled Judah and forced Jews to worship Greek gods and goddesses • Judas Maccabee assembled an army and drove Greeks out of Judah and later ruled Judah • Destroyed images of Greek gods and goddesses and made it into temples for worshiping God of Israel • Cleansing of the temple is celebrated each year at Hanukkah 96

Jewish Way of Life • Jewish law governed daily life • Education, diet, clothing • Family Life- son was important because he carried on family name, respect parents • Education- important to read Torah and learn to earn living…Fathers taught sons and mothers taught daughters • Diet- Kosher(preparation), only fish, no pork • Clothing-could not combine fabrics (flax/wool)…men wore tunics and caps or turbans, women wore dresses and covered heads in shawls

Jews and Romans • 63 BC- Romans conquered Judah • King Herod- very cruel, rebuilt temple • Pharisees- taught Torah and how to apply its laws to daily life- made Judaism a religion of the home and family • Sadducees- concerned with faith and priests • Essenes- Spent time praying and waiting for God to deliver the Jews from Romans- wrote Dead Sea Scrolls

  9. Jewish Revolts • Hated Roman rule as it was oppressive • Waited for Messiah, a deliverer sent by God • Zealots- wanted to fight Romans • Several revolts occurred but were only briefly successful
