What is a demonstrative adjective or pronoun? • Demonstrative Adjectives are placed in front of a noun to specify which object the speaker is referring to in regards to how far away said object is from the speaker. • Demonstrative Pronouns are similar. They replace a noun that is previously mentioned in a sentence while at the same time specifying which object the speaker is referring to in regards to how far away said object is from the speaker. These pronouns will not have a noun immediately follow it.

  3. How/when are they used? • Demonstrative adjectives/pronouns are used when the speaker wants to specify • which object he is referring to in regards of how far away that object is from • him/ her.

How it is formed THIS MAN • To replace or modify a noun(s) close to the speaker (this one) • Use: Este(a) and Estos(as) for modifying the noun [adj] • Use: Éste(a) and Éstos(as) for replacing the noun [pronoun] • Examples: • Siéntenseen estassillas. (Sit in these chairs.) • Micocheesmásrápidoqueéste. (My car is faster than this one.)

To replace or modify a noun or nouns that are not very close to the speaker (that one) • Use: Eso(a) or Esos(as) for modifying the noun [adj] • Use:Éso(a) or Ésos(as) for replacing the noun [pronoun] • Examples: • ¿Tegustaesacamisa? (Do you like that shirt?) • Ésasson lasmásbonitas. (Those are the most beautiful.) THAT MAN THIS MAN

To replace or modify a noun or nouns far from the speaker and listener (that one over there) • Use: Aquel/Aquella or Aquellos(as) to modify the noun [adj] • Use: Aquél/Aquélla or Aquéllos(as) to replace the noun [pronoun] • Examples: • Aquelperroespeligroso. (That dog over there is dangerous.) • Aquéllos son los jefes. (Those over there are the bosses.) THAT MAN OVER THERE THIS MAN THAT MAN
