  1. Respiratory System

  2. Function of Respiratory System • Respiration means breathing getting oxygen to cells in the body and getting rid of carbon dioxide

  3. Steps in Breathing • 1st Step  Take in air through the nose or mouth.

  4. Steps in Breathing • 2nd Step  Air flows into pharynx, passes epiglottis, and moves through larynx. When you swallow food, the epiglottis covers the entrance to the trachea, which prevents food from getting into the air pathways.

  5. Steps in Breathing • 3rd Step  Air travels into the windpipe, or trachea.

  6. Steps in Breathing • 4th Step  Trachea splits into two pipes called the bronchi, which lead into the lungs.

  7. Steps in Breathing • 5th Step  Air sacs in the lungs called alveoli, where gas exchange occurs.

  8. Think again!! Enjoy smoking?

  9. How do you breathe? • When you inhale… muscles between ribs contract and diaphragm flattens.  These actions create a slight vacuum and air rushes into the lungs. EXHALE INHALE

  10. How do you breathe? • When you exhale… rib muscles and diaphragm relax.  The relaxation of muscles decrease the volume of the chest cavity and forces most of the air out of the lungs. EXHALE INHALE

  11. Last ThoughtAnswer the question with 3-5 sentences & bring to class with you for discussion. What do you think would happen if you did not have a diaphragm?
