HBD vessel construction and pretest GEM foils I. Ravinovich for Weizmann group I. Ravinovich
HBD vessel construction • The construction of the HBD detector vessel will be done at the Weizmann Institute • The mechanical design has been developed and construction procedures have been practiced over the last few months on the full scale prototype which is very similar to the final detector • Special care is taken to minimize the amount of the material and the dead or inactive areas due to the frames or spacing between adjacent detector modules • At present the construction of the prototype is almost complete I. Ravinovich
Panel construction • The detector vessel has a polygonal shape formed by panels glued together • The panels which are behind the HBD active area consist of a 0.25 mm thick FR4 sheet and a 0.5 mm multilayer motherboard glued under vacuum to ¾” thick honeycomb core • The other panels, outside the active area, are made of honeycomb sandwiched between two 0.25 mm thick FR4 facesheets I. Ravinovich
The detector anode • The detector anode is a double-sided PCB with the hexagonal pad pattern on the inner side and short signal traces on the other side • Plated through holes in the PCB connect the pads to the traces • The PCB is made of 0.05 mm thick Kapton foil with 0.005 mm copper cladding, in one single piece • The PCB is glued in a jig to the six panels which are behind the HBD active area I. Ravinovich
The readout board • Short wires are soldered at the edges of the signal traces and passed through small holes in the panels to bring the pad signals to the outer side of the motherboard into which the individual preamplifiers are plugged I. Ravinovich
Gluing panels • The prepared panels are then glued together in a specially manufactured jig • Since the geometry of the final detector is different from one of the prototype the new jig needs to be prepared • The gas in/out manifolds and HV SHV connectors are placed on the inserts made of FR4 glued to the panels I. Ravinovich
Gluing frames • Then the entire box is glued to an FR4 frame, ¾” wide and 7 mm thick which connects all panels together on each side providing mechanical stability and rigidity to the entire box • The two sides of the box are closed with covers (also made of honeycomb sandwiched between two 0.25 mm FR4 facesheets) which are bolted on the frame with an 0-ring seal I. Ravinovich
Double mylar window • Special attention was taken in the design to ensure tightness of the box once closed • The plated-through holes are effectively sealed by the panels glued on the back side • Making the PCB in one piece and gluing it to the panels behind it solves the problem of potential leaks at the junctions between the panels • The other junctions are easily sealed by gluing a 0.05 mm thick mylar strips along the inner side of the junction • A double mylar window (2x0.05 mm thick) is glued onto the vertical panels (close to the beam axis) to further reduce the radiation length I. Ravinovich
Pretest GEM foils • The mounting of the GEM foils on the frames and their first pretest will be done at the Weizmann Institute • All manipulations with the foils will be done in a high level clean room I. Ravinovich
Mounting procedure • Special tooling has been developed to stretch the foils and the mesh and glue them onto narrow (5 mm wide) FR4 frame • The GEM foil is first stretched • The glue is applied on the FR4 frame • Then the foil is glued to the FR4 frame I. Ravinovich
Assembly in a SS vessel • Soldering the resistors to the HV segments. Surface mounted resistors will be used • Assembly triple GEM module on the flange in the glovebox flushed with Nitrogen • Pump the detector, put the gas and test it I. Ravinovich
Summary • The mechanical design for the HBD has been developed • The construction procedure of the detector vessel has been practiced over the last few months building the full scale prototype which is almost complete • Special tooling for the GEM foils pretest has been developed and successfully tested • We are ready to start building the final detector I.
