INSTRUCTIONAL FRAMEWORKPUYALLUP SCHOOL DISTRICT WHAT it is and WHY we have one
What is an Instructional Framework? • An instructional or leadership framework provides a common language that is shared by everyone in the district and is aligned to the teacher or principal criteria as outlined in RCW 28A.405.100
Why have an Instructional Framework? • Districts use the common language of instruction/leadership to converse about effective teaching and leading, give and receive feedback, and collect and act upon data to improve our craft.
How does this align with our strategic directions? • The improvement of instruction and student achievement is our primary goal.
What is TPEP? • TPEP stands for the Teacher and Principal Evaluation Project • New Washington state legislation requires the creation of new teacher and principal evaluation systems. • The new evaluation system must be aligned with a research-based instructional framework. • We begin by identification of an instructional framework, then work towards implementation of TPEP.
How did we identify an instructional framework for our district? • A 28 member committee was commissioned by the superintendent for the purpose of analyzing the Danielson, Seven Dimensions, and Marzano instructional frameworks and developing a recommendation of which model the district should adopt • Collaboration among members included • Teachers appointed by PEA • Building and Student Learning Dept administrators
Rational in Adopting Danielson’s Model • Uses teacher voice. • Clear, concise, understandable language. • Provides opportunities for growth. • Training can be leveraged with other districts.
Next Steps • Implement the Evaluation Committee • Activate Communication Plan • Develop and implement professional development plan • Continue training on use of framework language
Instructional Framework • Danielson’s Framework for Teaching • Planning and Preparation • Classroom Environment • Instruction • Professional Responsibilities
Common Core State Standards • English Language Arts & Mathematics • Coherent progression of learning • College and career success • Adaptive online assessments • Implementation in 2014 - 2015
Absolutely necessary vs “nice to know” • Safety net for promotion • Depth over breadth • “What knowledge and skills must I impart to my students this year so that they will enter next year’s class with confidence • and a readiness for success?” • Power Standards
