  1. Tea Party Movement By Alex Teeple

  2. Beginnings • The first Tea Party-esque protests were held in early 2009, first by Trevor Leach, who was protesting a series of what he called “obesity taxes” (Berger) • Tea Party leaders credit KeliCarender with holding the first so-called tea party in February 2009, though the term tea party was not used. • News of the movement was slow in coming, only Fox news reported on the rallies, and then three months after the fact. • The Party began to nationalize after their website went live on February 19

  3. Policies • The party does not style itself as a political party • Simply contents itself to complain about the established Democrat party

  4. References • The name ‘Tea Party’ is an obvious reference to the Boston Tea Party • Ironic considering the complete incompatibility between the conservatism of the modern Tea Party and the revolutionary counterpart. • Also uses Gadsen ‘Don’t Tread on Me Flag’

  5. Criticism • Several Tea Party leaders have been accused of racism, with varying degrees of success. • One conservative noted that the movement has become less about politics, and more just a hate movement. • Jean Howard-Hill said the following: "Any movement which cannot openly denounce racism, calling it out as wrong troubles me. To attack President Obama on his policy is one thing, but to do so on his race or some hysterical pretext of socialism is yet another."
