  1. 1. May 30, 1851. O.H. Platt acquired Bellows Falls Gazette: with this issue BFG will be united with VT Phoenix. United as in business, not in title, as far as I can tell. Did Platt change name of BFG to Vermont Republican? See slide 7. We do not have any 1851 issues of Phoenix or Vermont Republican. Proquest has some 1850 issues of the Phoenix.

  2. 2. “Phoenix is defunct. In its place we have Vermont Statesman.” Jan. 8, 1852 issue of Semi-Weekly Eagle. I do not take this to mean that the Statesman continues the Phoenix, especially given subsequent developments, but I can see how it could be read that way. Last issue of Phoenix we have is 1849. Proquest has some 1850 issues. Dec.27, 1850 issue contains no relevant info about paper. We do not have the first issue of the Statesman.

  3. 3. Lawsuit, libel 10/8/1852 O.H. Platt (Phoenix and then Statesman) vs. B.D. Hale (Eagle) court session. Reported in October 11, 1852 Semi Weekly Eagle. Mentions bound volumes of Phoenix 1850-1851.

  8. 8. Vermont Phoenix. v. 1, no.1. 1855. Cummings. “We commence the publication of a weekly newspaper…” “Union of two Whig papers of this village” mentioned in para. 2 probably means Statesman and Eagle, joined as Republican.

  9. 9. Phoenix merged with Vermont Republican with July 4, 1857 issue. New title is explicitly given: “published under the name Vermont Phoenix” (June 27, 1857) and “will be known as “The Vermont Phoenix.” Banner is Phoenix; colophon shows Phoenix and VT Republican.
