  1. 1. May 30, 1851. O.H. Platt acquired Bellows Falls Gazette: with this issue BFG will be united with VT Phoenix. United as in business, not in title, as far as I can tell. Did Platt change name of BFG to Vermont Republican? See slide 7. We do not have any 1851 issues of Phoenix or Vermont Republican. Proquest has some 1850 issues of the Phoenix.

  2. 2. “Phoenix is defunct. In its place we have Vermont Statesman.” Jan. 8, 1852 issue of Semi-Weekly Eagle. I do not take this to mean that the Statesman continues the Phoenix, especially given subsequent developments, but I can see how it could be read that way. Last issue of Phoenix we have is 1849. Proquest has some 1850 issues. Dec.27, 1850 issue contains no relevant info about paper. We do not have the first issue of the Statesman.

  3. 3. Lawsuit, libel 10/8/1852 O.H. Platt (Phoenix and then Statesman) vs. B.D. Hale (Eagle) court session. Reported in October 11, 1852 Semi Weekly Eagle. Mentions bound volumes of Phoenix 1850-1851.

  4. 4. Vermont Statesman began 1852, ceased 1855 Jan. O.H. Platt (previously associated with Phoenix). We do not have 1st issue. 5. 5. Semi Weekly Eagle 1847 (August 10)-1852 (Dec. 9; ceased with this issue, per paper). Harris, Hale, Cummings. Proquest In its place, a new weekly. Brattleboro Eagle. See next slide.

  6. 6. Brattleboro Eagle. Weekly. 1852-1854. Cummings, who starts Phoenix in 1855, involved in publishing Eagle. Title: The Brattleboro’ eagle. Description: v. ; 64 cm. Vol. 6, no. 34 (December 24, 1852)- Ceased with Dec. 29, 1854 issue. Published: Brattleboro, Vt. : B.D. Harris & C. Cummings, Frequency: Weekly Previous Titles: Semi-weekly eagle Notes: Description based on: Vol. 7, no. 1 (Jan. 7, 1853). The Brattleboro’ eagle and the Vermont statesman (Brattleboro, Vt.), agreed to "merge" on Jan. 1, 1855 with the "Republican." Cf. Brattleboro’ eagle, Dec. 29, 1854. Subject(s): Brattleboro (Vt.) Newspapers. 7. 7. Vermont Republican. Publishing history, from History of Rockingham: Started 1838. “June 5, 1851… sold to O.H. Platt, after which, as the Vermont Republican, it was published at Brattleboro, Bellows Falls, and Ludlow simultaneously….Its connection with BF was discontinued August 6, 1856…” Repository: University of Vermont Format: MICROFILM Holdings: <1855:3:9,6:1> <1856:2:1> Repository: Vermont Department of Libraries Format: MICROFILM Holdings: <1855:3:9,6:1> <1856:2:1> Notes: Misc. #52 Repository: Vermont Historical Society Format: MICROFILM Holdings: <1855:3:9,6:1> <1856:2:1> Can’t find this in Voyager—maybe misc. 52? LRA

  8. 8. Vermont Phoenix. v. 1, no.1. 1855. Cummings. “We commence the publication of a weekly newspaper…” “Union of two Whig papers of this village” mentioned in para. 2 probably means Statesman and Eagle, joined as Republican.

  9. 9. Phoenix merged with Vermont Republican with July 4, 1857 issue. New title is explicitly given: “published under the name Vermont Phoenix” (June 27, 1857) and “will be known as “The Vermont Phoenix.” Banner is Phoenix; colophon shows Phoenix and VT Republican.
