Getting Started • Use a handle similar to your real name. • Upload a picture. • Include your real name, location, bio, webpage, etc.
follow Clicking “Follow” makes you a follower!
@reply A tweet that is directed to a single person you follow that all of your followers can see.
Direct Message (DM) A direct message sent within twitter in private to another person you follow. Other followers cannot Sort of like texting. * Don’t send Direct Messages to people that you aren't following because they can't respond back to you.
RT or “retweet” Use RT to share what the people you follow post.
Tinyurl A service that shortens URLs so they take up fewer characters in a tweet. • (Twitter automatically shortens your links to TinyURLs if they’re too long.) Alternatives to TinyURL becoming popular. • Bit.ly – Shorter, & gives stats. • Is.gd – Very short links. • SnipURL (snurl.com)– simliar to TinyURL.
Hashtags Putting a # in front of a word (no space).Can use to search and track.
Fail Whale Sometimes Twitter saturates. Wait 10 seconds or so and it usually goes away!
Some Twittlingo2 • tweetup • gathering at a local restaurant or watering hole, everyone is invited • tweeps or tweeple • your twitter friends • twebinar • webinar utilizing twitterspace • twestival • a charity event promoted via Twitter • just add “tw” • ???
A Few Tips1 • Talk first, follow later • Start with friends, expand slowly • Don’t bother going “private” • Post consistently and you’ll get it.
What should you write about?1 • News in your business/industry. • Helpful tips. • Links to your new blog posts. • What’s going on in your life (with caution).
Try to avoid writing about 1 • What you ate for lunch. • Politics • Your travel schedule. • “Figuring out Twitter”
How do you find people to follow? • Find People by name on Twitter. • Find people using keywords, location, interests, etc. • Find people on other networks (Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN, and AOL for now). • Look for common interests using sites like WeFollow.com • Look at your friends’ friends. Who Should You Follow Back? That is up to you…. Set your basic criteria and then decide on individual basis.

Important2 • Spam is just as annoying on Twitter. • Use direct messages with care. • Remember to be respectful and smart. • Twitter is not instant messaging.
Twitter can be... 2 • a cost-effective (free) option to accentuate existing messages; • a broadcasting tool to announce relevant information to specific audiences; • and a (brief) conversational tool to appropriately respond to relevant inquiries and follow-up questions or comments.
Two Twitter Types2 Broadcaster • useful if audience knows what they are getting • another way to push information • works best if you have good information to give • could fill a need from specific area or topic Conversationalist • provides a "voice" seen as an authority and source • ROE - return on engagement a way to interact with those interested in topic
