WP1: Data collection and metadata compilation inMediterranean Sea EMODNET Chemistry 2, Kick-off meeting Trieste (Italy), 3-5 June 2013 Sissy Iona, HCMR-HNODC
Outline • EMODNet Chemistry I : Work Overview • EMODNet Chemistry II • Initial Inventory • Conclusions • Actions
Mediterranean data pool • >10.000 stations aggregated in the regional data pool • 5 spots (Balearic Sea, Gulf of Lion, North Adriatic Sea, Gulf of Athens and NE Levantine basin)
EMODNet I Work Flow for data collection and products preparation
Data Analysis per month, depth per year per season
Products definition • Interpolated maps (by DIVA tool) • For homogeneous and sufficient data distribution in time and space such as • basin scale data • Time series plots (by ODV) • no homogeneous data distribution such as • coastal monitoring stations or • datasets with fragmented coverage
Diva products • visualized by Ocean Browser, developed by GHER group (loaded as WMS)
Time series plots visualized by Ocean Browser, developed by GHER group (loaded as WMS)
Data access restriction Partners provide even restricted data to the Mediterranean regional data pool to be used for the products/climatologies generation. These data treated as restricted in case of user request through the CDI User Interface. Cases of MEDAR/MEDATLAS climatologies, MyOcean products

Water parameters groups (ISPRA (*) and IFREMER updates of 1-June-2013 included)
Biota parameters groups (ISPRA (*) updates of 1-June-2013 included)
Sediment parameters groups (ISPRA (*)updates of 1-June-2013 included)
OC-UCY (Cyprus) Existing in CDI: • 499 stations • 137 stations of T,S, nutrients, Oxygen, plankton, current meters, CO2, DIC, TA New ship cruises for 2011-2012
OGS (Italy) some of the new datasets of N. Adriatic(not final map)
IEO (Spain) • 150 new stations, fertilizers (at same positioning with EMODNet I)
IEO (Spain) • positions of red mullet (yellow) • sediment sampling stations (magenta) • not time series, but spot sampling
IOF (Croatia) Existing in CDI: • 1477 water samplers
IOLR (Israel) • 1667 stations in initial inventory • 3112 stations in CDI
CNR-Sediment • Heavy metals, fertilizers and other nitrogen- and phosphorus-rich substances, Organic and Inorganic pollutants, organic matter/granulometry, biomolecules, radionuclides, toxicology/Bioassay on Sea Urchins • 975 stations
CNR-Water column • O2, CO2, acidity, silicates, dissolved trace metals, fertilizers and other nitrogen- and phosphorus-rich substances, dissolved oxygen, particulate organic matter, Microbiology, plankton • 1390 stations
ISPRA (Italy) Monitoring programmes sampling stations related to Eutrophication and contaminant (i.e. D5 and D8 Descriptors of Marine Strategy)
IFREMER-DYNECO(France) two french labs (SISMER and DYNECO) from Ifremer which provide data for EMODNET Chemistry 3923 coastal stations: Acidity, Antifoulants, Chl, Partial pressures of dissolved gases, fertilizers, Heavy metals, Hydrocarbons, Organic matter, Pesticides and biocides Silicates
IFREMER-SISMER (France) 7167 water column stations: AMON, CORG, NTRA, NTRI, NTOT, NTRI, PHOS, PCIP, POCP
HCMR (Greece)(not final data sets, biota not included) 62 sediment stations of heavy metals 4023 water column stations of Radionuclides, Hydrocarbons, Fertilizers, Organic Matter, Chlorophyll, Silicates, Dissolved Gasses, Acidity, Heavy metals
YugNIRO (Ukraine) Fertilisers and other nitrogen- and phosphorus-rich substances
Conclusions Improvement of data along coastline In general there is improvement of data coverage compared to the existing CDI archive New parameters within parameters groups like CO2, partial pressure of oxygen (for climate change studies), pH Improved national networking and coordination (Italy example)
Next Actions • M0-M3 • Partners: start WP1- Data collection, metadata compilation (CDI preparation), provision of datasets in ODV format to regional pool leaders • Regional leaders: start analysis of spatial and temporal data coveragein coordination with WP3 to provide the monitoring requirements for the MSFD. Check with other regions for comparable results. • M6 • Regional leaders: First results • Form a group for products validation before publication • M13-M30 • Regional leaders: Development of new products for MSFD
