chemistry Section 9.2-1 Naming Ionic Compounds with Transition Metals
Naming and Writing Formulas for Ionic Compounds 9.2-1 • A recipe is a formula for the sauce—a complete list of ingredients and their proportions. Chemistry also uses formulas. Once you know the rules, you can write the formula for any chemical compound.
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions • Ions of Transition Metals • How are the charges of some transition metal ions determined?
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions • The charges of the cations of many transition metal ions must be determined from the number of electrons lost.
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions • These colorful solutions contain the transition metal ions Co3+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Ni2+, and Mn2+.
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions • Many transition metal compounds are colored and can be used as pigments.
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions • Two methods are used to name the ions of transition metals. • The Stock System • The Classical Method We will use the “Stock System” for naming the ions of transition metals.
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions • In the Stock System, a roman numeral in parentheses is placed after the name of the element to indicate the numerical value of the charge. • Thus, Cu+ becomes copper(I) and Cu2+ becomes copper (II).
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions • In an older less, useful method, the classical name of the element is used to form the root name for the element. • This method is not really used now, but is shown in the table on the following page.
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions • Tin(II) fluoride, or SnF2,is added to toothpastes to prevent cavities.
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions • Tin(IV) sulfide, or SnS2, is used in glazes for porcelain fixtures and dishes.
9.2-1 Transition Metal Ions • Hematite, a common ore of iron, contains iron (III) oxide. The balanced formula is Fe2O3.
9.2-1 Transition Ions • Write the names for the following ionic compounds with transition metals in them. • CuCl2 • Hg2O • PbS2 • PbS • Fe2O3 • FeO copper (II) chloride mercury (I) oxide lead (IV) sulfide Lead (II) sulfide iron (III) oxide iron (II) oxide
9.2-1 Compounds With Polyatomic Ions • Lead(II)sulfate is an important component of an automobile battery.
9.2-1 Section Quiz • 1. The correct name for CrCl3 is • chromium chlorine. • chromium(III) chloride. • monochromiumtrichloride. • chromium(III) trichloride.
9.2-1 Section Quiz • 2. What is the correct formula for strontium nitride? • Sr3N2 • SrN2 • Sr2N3 • Sr3N
