Christianity Spreads • Early in the first century Christianity pops up around Rome. • Before this Romans were a polytheistic society. • They Believed in many gods. • At first Roman officials thought Christianity was just a form of Judaism and they didn’t anticipate that Christianity would become a major force in the Empire.
Christianity began to grow rapidly and high ranking officials were worried about the spread of Christianity, so they tried to stop it. • So… How did it spread? • In the 300s a Roman Emperor converted to Christianity and made it Rome’s official religion. • By the 300s, most of Rome’s population was Christian.
As the church grew, so did it’s power. • Heads of the church became major features in Roman society. • The most influential of these leaders was the pope, and the bishop of Rome. • The influence of the pope and Christian leaders helped unify Rome as a single Christian society.
