  1. Unit 1 Vocabulary:The World of Advertising Most definitions and example sentences are taken from either the Merrium-Webster Online Learners’s Dictionary or the NorthStar 3 Reading and Writing Book (3rd Edition)

  2. Advertisement • Noun: something shown to the public to help sell a product or make an announcement. (such as a short film or written notice) • The advertisement will appear in 3 magazines. • I saw an advertisement for a new car on TV last night.

  3. Campaign • Noun: a series of activities designed to produce a particular result (advertising campaigns, political campaigns, military campaigns, anti-smoking campaigns, campaigns to save natural area or historical building Etc.) • Verb: to lead or take part in a campaign

  4. Example Sentences Noun • Advertisers must plan their campaigns carefully. • Jacko’s angry campaign worked well in Australia but not in the United States • The goal of the campaign was to sell more cars to women Verb • She is campaigning to save the town library. • He campaigned hard to get more funding. • I campaigned for her when she ran for governor.

  5. The “Got Milk” advertising campaign is very effective.

  6. To catch someone’s eye • Verb phrase: to attract someone’s attention • He caught the girl’s eye. • The red car passing by caught his eye. • I want the size of our advertisement to catch people’s eye. • When using this phrase, make sure to identify who or what catches someone’s eye.

  7. Eye-catching • Adjective: very noticeable because of being unusual or attractive • The advertisement is very eye-catching. • Synonym: noticeable

  9. Catchy • Adjective: something you hear and remember • McDonalds has a catchy jingle. • Synonym: memorable

  10. Commercial • Adjective: 1. Related to the buying and selling of goods and services 2. Concerned with earning money • Synonym: profit-oriented • Noun: an advertisement on radio or television

  11. Example Sentences Adjective • Commercial advertising is now allowed on Chinese billboards. • The city wanted to encourage commercial rather than residential development along the river. • Noun • In Spain, there are a lot of commercials for perfume and cologne.

  12. Competition • Noun: 1. a person or group that you are trying to succeed against • Synonym: opponent 2. a contest

  13. Example Sentences • Definition 1: • Don’t let the competition know your strategy. • Pepsi is Coca Cola’s competition. • Definition 2: • American Idol is a popular singing competition.

  14. To convince (someone) • Verb: to persuade someone to believe or do something. (needs an object) • The advertisement convinced me to buy the product. • The women is trying to convince people to hire her. • Synonym: Persuade

  15. Exotic • Adjective: 1. from another part of the world 2. very different, strange, or unusual • In Brazil, Coca Cola sells a drink flavored with guarana, an exotic South American fruit. • Synonyms: foreign, unusual

  16. To fail • Verb: to not succeed • The ads failed to sell cars to single women without children. • He is failing the class. • I don’t like to fail. • Synonym: Unsuccessful

  17. Firm • Noun: a business organization • To sell a product in a foreign country, a firm often has to write new ads. • Synonyms: company, business • Adjective: hard or solid (not soft) • I like firm mattresses.

  18. Global • Adjective: involving the entire world • English is becoming a global language • Global business such as McDonald’s offer different products in different parts of the world. • Synonyms: Worldwide, international

  19. Goal • Noun: something you are trying to do or achieve • Her primary goal is to get a college degree. • Synonyms: objective, target

  20. To hold (someone’s) attention • Verb phrase: to keep someone interested; to keep someone’s attention. • We will focus on using images to hold peoples’ attention. • The speaker held the audience’s attention.

  21. To impress • Verb: to cause someone to feel admiration or interest; to affect positively (needs an object) • The goal of advertising is to impress people and make them remember a product. • His qualifications impressedus. • Synonyms: dazzle, amaze • Often used as (be) impressed • I am impressed with your positive attitude. • We were impressed by his qualifications.

Impression • Noun: • an idea, feeling, or opinion about something • His first impression of Greenville was positive. • An effect produced on someone. • Her smile and courtesy made a good impression. • Synonym: impact, influence 3. something made by pressing or stamping a surface • Synonym: mark

  23. Market • Noun: 1. A place where products are bought and sold - I went to the market to buy milk. 2. An area (such as a country) where a product or service can be sold - New markets are opening up all over the world 3. A particular type of people who might by something - Advertisers are trying to appeal to the youth market. • Verb: to do things that cause people to know about and want to buy something. • These products are being aggressively marketed to teenagers through television ads. • Synonyms: promote, sell

Message • Noun: 1. a piece of information that is sent or given to someone. • Did you get my text message? • Synonym: communication 2. an important idea that someone is trying to express in a book, movie, speech, etc. • I liked the book, but I didn’t really agree with the books message. • Synonym: meaning, point

  25. To pay attention • Verb phrase: to listen and watch carefully • The teacher asked the class to pay attention. • The audience paid attention to the speaker. Pay attention vs. Hold people’s attention • The audience pays attention. • The speaker holds the audience's attention.

  26. To succeed • Verb: to achieve the correct or desired result • Advertisements that succeed use different styles of communication in different parts of the world. • He failedin his first attempt but succeeded in his second. • Synonym: triumph
