  1. Grade 3 unit 3 lesson 1 Digraph 00 sounds; prefixes & suffixes

  2. Digraph oo • We already know digraph oo can make the long (oo) sound as in the following words: moon, soon, noodle. • In this lesson, we will learn digraph oo also makes the short (oo) sound. • Examples: wood, shook, hood, cook, good. *There is no rule to know which way to read digraph oo. 1st: Try the long (oo) sound [moon], as it is the most common sound for digraph oo.

  3. PREFIX mis- = wrong Keywords: misspell, misunderstand PREFIX re- = back or again Keywords: rewind, review, replay

  4. CONSONANT SUFFIX -s = plural (nouns) Keywords: hats, balloons (Also 3rd person singular verbs: He sits. She spins.) CONSONANT SUFFIX -ness = quality of, having Keywords: goodness, kindness (usually a noun)

  5. Prefix vs. suffix • When we add a letter or letters BEFORE the base word, we call it a PREFIX. (Pre = before). • When we add a prefix, we do NOT change the spelling of the base word. We JUST ADD! • When we add a letter or letters AFTER the base word, we call it a SUFFIX. • When we add a suffix to the base word, we MUST know if the suffix is a VOWEL or CONSONANT suffix! • We can JUST ADD a consonant suffix. • There are rules for adding vowel suffixes.

  6. “JUST ADD” RULES! We know a SUFFIX is a VOWEL suffix if the 1st letter of the suffix begins with a vowel letter. * Examples: -ing, -ed, -es When we add a VOWEL suffix, we check the LAST 3 letters of the BASE word…if we have a vowel digraph, we can…JUST ADD! Example: cook + ing = cooking (VOWEL SUFFIX –ing = present tense)

  7. SPELLING WORDS Long (oo): Short (oo): balloons shook cartoon hoods school brook reboot driftwood troops football scoot misunderstood spool cooking stool goodness tooth hoof bathroom wool
