Grade 3 Unit 3 Lesson 4. OI and OY Sound Spellings. Diphthong oi and oy. You already know that when we see 2 letters making only 1 sound, we call it a digraph. Examples: sh , th , ch , oo . When we see 2 letters and we HEAR a little of each one, we call it a diphthong.

  2. Diphthong oi and oy You already know that when we see 2 letters making only 1 sound, we call it a digraph. Examples: sh, th, ch, oo. When we see 2 letters and we HEAR a little of each one, we call it a diphthong. Diphthong (oi) & Diphthong (oy) make the (oi) sound. Repeat: coin, noise, boy, joy

  3. DIPTHONG OI Dipthongoi makes the (oi) sound. It is REGULAR for spelling ONLY in the INITIAL & MEDIAL positions of the base word. oil, coin, appoint, avoid, spoil, moist (You may add suffixes to the base word!)

  4. Diphthong OY Diphthong oyalso makes the (oi) sound. It is REGULAR for spelling ONLY in the FINAL position of the base word. joy, boy, soy, annoy, employ (You may add suffixes to the base word!)

  5. Spelling Words coin joyful appoint boys rejoice employ choice cowboy avoid soybean noise annoying voice royal * spoil loyal * moist voyage * boiling oyster * * IRREGULAR – OY is regular in the final position
