The estimated African community size in Manitoba is 15,000 with about 90% in Winnipeg • The African community is as diversified and multicultural as the city • Africans come to Winnipeg from 40 of 53 countries in Africa, each having varied and unique cultural characteristics • Despite this variety, there are areas of cultural commonalties that cross the community Community profile

Who came? • The Student Group • 1940's to early 1980's to acquire education, knowledge, expertise to return and establish a better life in Africa • The Professional Group • Immigration changes in 1967 benefited many young, skilled, European-educated Africans who did not wish to return to Africa immediately • The Refugee & Exile Group • Since the 1960’s have come from areas of Africa where civil wars & unrest, wars of political independence , and persecutions took place PAST

  14. Conclusions from A Profile of the African Community of ManitobaBy Dr. K.C. Asagwara Many good things are happening in the community. No matter the level at which they are employed, most people work very hard; many have bought their own homes, some have started their own businesses, many in the white community are beginning to show a more positive attitude and understanding of the African community. Future

There are athletes at both provincial and national levels, in the police force, teachers and professors in the schools and universities, nurses and doctors in Manitoba hospitals, professionals and managers in both public and private sectors of the economy. These developments are having positive and inspirational effects on young people in the African and larger Black community. There are role models for them in every field of human endeavour. Future

  16. With more resources and programs from the institutions of government, economic opportunities for individual and community development, efforts of the people in the community, and support from the society at large, a lot more can be achieved. Future
