“Good is the enemy of great.” • With the complimentary student memberships, affiliate membership has grown. • The AARC now has 40,000 members. • Some affiliates have identified membership chairs.
First Who…Then What? • Collins talks about having the right people on the bus: “…if you have the right people on the bus, the problem of how to motivate and manage people largely goes away.” • If not Affiliate Presidents, then who?
Confront the Brutal Facts. • We have over 40,000 members, but every month, approximately 1,000 members let their memberships lapse. • Although the complimentary student program has been successful in introducing students to the AARC, many students are not renewing their AARC membership upon graduation. • Many regular AARC members fail to renew each year. • The number of possible AARC members is much larger than the actual number.
A Culture of Discipline • “Put your best people on your biggest opportunities, not your biggest problems.” • Membership growth is one of our biggest opportunities. • Affiliate leadership is best positioned to take advantage of opportunity. • Membership Committee will focus efforts on “opportunity states”
Why is membership so important? • Enhanced leverage with State and Federal Government and other agencies and organizations • Greater opportunity for coordinated professional development and advancement • Other reasons? * Affiliates can request to become an “opportunity state.”
The Flywheel Concept • “What do the right people want…? They want to be part of a winning team.” • Pointing to tangible results helps people feel the momentum and get on board enthusiastically. • Tremendous power exists in the fact of continued improvement and the delivery of results.(Track affiliate progress through the House of Delegates)
Why greatness? • “If you’re engaged in work that you love and care about, for whatever reason, then the question needs no answer.” • “Get involved in something that you care so much about that you want to make it the greatest it can possibly be.”
