The US and the Soviet Union face off with nuclear weapons • The Soviet Union successfully tested its first atomic bomb in 1949 • The US monopoly on nuclear power had only lasted for four years • The US tested the first hydrogen bomb (H bomb) in 1952 • 67 times as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima • The Soviets tested their first H bomb less than a year later

  4. PowerPoints, Step 1 • You will create a PowerPoint on how the Cold War proceeded during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower • First, read through pages 829-832 (starting with “The Policy of Brinkmanship” and stopping before “The Cold War Takes to the Skies”) and take notes on anything that you think will be important for your PowerPoint

In the late 1950’s, air and space technology served to increase tensions between the US and the Soviet Union • In the 1950’s, Stalin was replaced by Nikita Khrushchev as the leader of the Soviet Union • Compared to Stalin, Khrushchev was far more open to cooperation with the US • The Space Race began when the Soviets launched the first ever artificial satellite: Sputnik • The US scrambled to catch up, beginning a competition that would last throughout the 1960’s • The US used spy planes over the Soviet Union • The U-2 flew high enough that, it was believed, the Soviets would be unable to detect or shoot it down • In May, 1960, a U-2 was shot down over the Soviet Union, two weeks before a conference between Eisenhower and Khrushchev • Tension between the two countries skyrocketed afterward
