  2. The Chinese Civil War (1946-1949) • Following World War II and the removal of the Japanese from China, China fell into a civil war between two major groups: the Nationalists and the Communists.

  3. Who won? What was the end result? • The Communists • We now have two Chinas in the world: • The People’s Republic of China controlled by the communists • Supported by the USSR • Taiwan controlled by the nationalists • Supported by the USA

  5. Communist China Post Civil War (1949-1958) • Leader of the County: Mao Zedong • Expansionist Goals for the country: • Communist China takes over parts of Mongolia, Tibet, India, and Korea (the north)

Life in Communist China • Economy: • Like USSR-the government ruled the economy • A socialist or command economy • Economic reforms: • Mao took back the land and redistributed it to form communes (large collective farms) • No more private companies—all government controlled • These reforms worked!

  7. Lifestyle • Women were given equal rights • Childcare given to all

  8. 1958-1961 • Totalitarian control • People owned nothing • 1960: The relationship between the USSR and China ended • They shared a large border • Both nations wanted to lead the Communist Revolution • Mao took a step back and let others lead the party in China • The government relaxes without Mao

  9. Communism without Mao • Mao learned about this and started another revolution in 1966 • Goal: use young people to lead the revolution • Formed small units called Red Guards • The Red Guard began a Cultural Revolution • Major Idea of the CR: “A hero works with their hands.”
