1968 1968 This was a difficult visit. We were starving with no child support or alimony from Hal. I was trying to decide whether to work in Europe or return to Berkeley for the Doctorate. My aunt, with my Power of Attorney, quit- claimed our house to Hal. I decided to return so Hal would see his sons. My father did take us to Greece. Children in Piazza Narvona, Rome, Jonathan in the blue corduroy coat lined with grey silk, with brass Buttons (like the Beatrix Potter one), I had made for Richard. It was bitterly cold. London at Christmas, Jon, Julia, Maria Antonia, Colin, her cousins, Richard. Taken by Uncle Richard
1973 We fly to London, pick up a new Volkwagen, go to the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, but Richard gets lost, following a different Regiment. I am desperate. We are to meet my Godmother, Florence Shepherd for lunch. Many hours later finding Richard at the police station from a note on the car, we finally meet at ‘The Great American Disaster’ in Chelsea for hamburgers. This is Auntie Florence at Ascot.

Apart from my annual visits to my father while he was dying in Rome and on short research visits, I next came to Europe, 1987-1988, on a year’s Sabbatical Fellowship, Then returned for good in 1993, having taken early retirement as Professor Emerita,, my children grown and having children of their own in turn. I was able to visit them each year, except after 9/11 when I was blocked for five years because I was on a European, not American passport.
