SciVal Experts is an expertise profiling and research networking tool that helps researchers, administrators, managers and senior leadership identify experts and enable collaboration within their institution and across organizations • What does SciVal Experts do? • Searchable directory to find experts and facilitate new partnerships • Understand ‘who knows’ what by researcher and department • Accurate, up-to-date author profiles for the researchers in your institution • Showcase your researchers’ activities and accomplishments "SciVal Experts gives us a comprehensive snapshot of our faculty’s research activities and makes it easy to find experts in a given discipline for collaborative research. Exercise 1c: How do I enter additional information into my profile? • Click the ‘Edit Your Profile’ button • Click ‘Update My Profile With My Own Information’ • Enter your username and password • Select your domain(s) of expertise • Click any of the ‘Add’ buttons to enter data • When the form is completed, click ‘Save’ • To edit the information, click the relevant ‘Add’ button and then click ‘Edit’ by the record you’d like to update 13

Exercise 2: How can I find experts in a specific concept within my institution? • Search by a concept of interest to identify experts in a specific area of research • Select specific concept from list provided • Review list of researchers • Add or remove concepts to refine search • Access publications associated with concept • View researcher’s profile 15

  16. Exercise 3: How can I identify similar experts in my institution? In addition to searching by concept in SciVal Experts, you can also identify collaborators by using the Similar Experts feature • Bring up researcher profile • Access list of Similar Experts • Click on a researcher’s name to visit his or her profile 16

  17. Exercise 4: How can I find the right researchers for a funding opportunity? You can identify potential collaborators for a funding opportunity by searching for experts in a specific concept, outlined earlier in this guide, or by conducting a full text search. • Copy text from source document • Paste text in ‘free text search’ box • Select a vocabulary for the analysis • Review list of experts • Tailor search criteria as needed 17

Exercise 5: How do I navigate my co-author network? • Access a list of your co-authors • View publications you co-authored • Click on an internal co-author’s name to access his or her profile • Access the Research Network visualization • Identify co-author relationships • Pull up details of individual co-authors 18

Search for potential collaborators across the SciVal Experts Community. • Click SciVal Experts Community • Search by concept, last name or full text • Review list of researchers • Click on a researcher’s name to access his or her profile 19

New Funding Recommendation Module: How it works 1 2 3 • The Elsevier Fingerprint Engine™ analyzes funding opportunities within the SciVal Funding database • Fingerprints of a researcher’s individual publication abstracts in SciVal Experts are linked to Fingerprints of opportunities based on matched concepts Researchers receive targeted recommendations for funding opportunities and potential collaborators via e-alerts and personal web pages Publication Opportunity Welcome Researcher 1 ü A unique Fingerprint is generated for each funding opportunity • The weight and number of concepts shared by the publication and funding opportunity dictate the “strength” of a recommendation NIH AIDS Gates Cancer

  25. How does the Funding Recommendation Module compare to SciVal Funding? Funding Module in SciVal Experts SciVal Funding • Recommendations for funding opportunities and collaborators • No action required by the user to receive recommendations • Offers less recommendations for opportunities than Funding but more targeted suggestions • Recommendations are based on matched concepts between an opportunity and the researcher’s individual publications – identified via the Elsevier Fingerprint Engine • Users can only get recommendations for themselves • Access to a complete database of opportunities and awarded grants • User sets up profile to receive recommendations • Provides more recommendations for opportunities than the funding tool in Experts – good for browsing • Recommendations are based on matches between an opportunity and the researcher’s Scopus profile – matches are based on eligibility criteria, keywords and subject areas • User can get recommendations for other researchers
