REPORTED AIDS CASES, Tanzania, 1983 – 2000, • 1983 - 3 cases Ndolage hospital, Kagera • 1984 - also Tabora (2) and Kilimanjaro (1) • Dec 1985 - 404 cases from 8 of the 20 regions, 322 (80%) from Kagera • End of 1986 - All 20 regions had reported • End of 2000 – 130,386, MOH estimates 660,000 cases

REPORTED AIDS CASES, TANZANIA, 2000 • Among 11,673 cases reported, 51% occurred among women • 70.5% of all cases occurred among persons aged 25 - 49 • 15% of all cases occurred among youths aged 15 – 24 • Highest frequencies by sex were reported among women aged 25-29 and men aged 30–34 • These data suggest that females acquire infection and develop signs and symptoms at an earlier age than men, assuming same incubation period

SUMMARY • Prevalence among pregnant women has remained above 10% in all social geographical areas being tracked except Bukoba urban • Rates vary by socio-geographic settings • Prevalence steady or fluctuating in the majority of sites • Trend of children whose parents have died is on increase • While these data has been useful in characterising early epidemic, efforts are ongoing to improve the reliability of the national surveillance system
