SWMP objective • Solid Waste Management Plan called for Composting Advisory Committee to assess feasibility of composting in our community • 59% Waste Diversion target by 2019 (Full plan implementation) • Centralized Composting for organic material management
Advisory Committee • 12 select members from the community have met over the past 9 months • Contracted Net Zero Waste to conduct Feasibility Analysis • Attended two site tours of 4 various facilities
Why Compost Organics • Saves PRRD $ for exporting waste to Rabanco, Wa • Reduction in taxes • Value of Organic materials as soil ammendment • “Right thing to do” for the environment
Recommendations • Begin process to Source Separate Organics for Composting with CPR collection • Educate the community • Open Houses / Forums on Composting • Post RFPs for Composting • One for Organic Processing • One for Hauling of materials
Next Steps • Continue Composting Advisory Committee through education and implementation phase • Work with CPR on Source -Separated Organics collection • Purchase bins for households & create distribution plan • Begin educational program for PRRD
Still unknowns • Private hauling contractors for rural residents • Multi-family Household collection • Commercial waste generators • Local site facility options??
